Spartans playing some good ball lately. Especially impressive with Duby not scoring 30+ points. Could be dangersous come tournament time.

What a crushing loss this had to be for Station who have also lost 4 of their last 5 games. I was wondering if Sayre had ever beaten Bryan Station before this game since there wasn't much made about the defeat so I went back as far as I could. Sayre beat Station in 2010 as well 62-50.

I would say a little of both @3/2 zone but this falls more on Station. Station is having some real struggles over there. Sayre hasn't challenged the likes of Scott Co, Henry Clay, West Jessamine, etc...... Look for them to beat Tates Creek as well, but that is an entirely different story within itself.

Are the struggles associated with lack of talent or the culture around the program?

I've watched Sayre a couple of times this year. They competed with Scott Co about as well as anyone, save Lex Cath, and against H Clay it was a 4 pt game with 2 min left. Not sure about W Jess, but Perry Central barely escaped at Lex Cath tournament. I would say they have a very competitive team. It was suggested before the season, they would be top 10 in region. Duby has been all that was advertised and the others around him can play. Station is perhaps not best they have been, but not bad either. Simply put, this was a solid win by Sayer.

What in the world is going on with some of the Fayette basketball programs???

Bryan Station and Tates Creek have sure falling downward from what I remember of their teams back in the day. All the Lexington public schools had strong programs, as they well should with enrollments close to 2,000.

 

When I read that Wolfe County defeated Tates Creek in a tournament during the holidays I was happy for my 14th region neighbor, but that sort of thing didn't use to happen when small mountain schools met up with the big Lexington schools.

Beating Tates Creek the last couple of years is nothing for anyone to put a feather in their cap, although any of the small county schools can use it as motivation (me being from a small school county as well I understand how that works). 35-96 over the last 5 years as of today & 10-40 over the last two years to get an idea on where they are as a program right now. Hopefully they can make a turn & start moving back up the win column sometime soon. Never like to see a program stay down.

 

I always like to see where someone thinks that 2000+ students is going to get you a top notch program in (____________) insert sport here, but thats just not the way it works. I've lived that life as well & it doesn't guarantee you a thing other than the parents of said kids thinking that they should win a championship due to numbers alone. Talent isn't always evenly disbursed in that population count & I'm telling you right now there are plenty of 1A/2A/3A sized schools that would decimate many 6A public schools in multiple sports. Been on the receiving end of those defeats as well. :(

Give me two high quality and hard working coaches of the same motivation, knowledge of the game, community support, and work ethic and I will guarantee you that the coach working with an enrollment of 2,000 will consistently beat a coach working with an enrollment of 300-500 90% of the time.

 

Size does matter. But it's not worth a plug nickel if the large school doesn't have a coaching staff that works their butts off and have a great developmental program in the early grades. If that's not part of their structure then you are correct, the smaller schools that do have a "hard work pays off" mentality will compete and sometimes defeat the larger schools.

I understand what you're saying. I'm not disagreeing that there's plenty of large sized schools that aren't living up to their expectations. What I'm saying is there are reasons those schools are like that. If the right people are in control and have support from the administrations in my opinion they will succeed.
