Covington Holy Cross 58 Highlands 56

Featured Replies

Final. Great game, both teams played hard.

Good win for HC. Had to miss this one.

Saw a video of Piper Macke getting a steal with less than 10 sec left and scoring to go ahead. Tough loss for the Birds on the road.

Highlands (13-5 overall) held for the last shot, but things unfortunately did not work out in its first 9th Region loss this year in eight games. Holy Cross (13-5) freshman Piper Macke stole the ball in the open court and raced in for the game-winning lay-up to lift the Lady Indians to the victory.

Highlands received more valiant efforts from senior Jenna Martin and sophomore Zoie Barth with 22 and 16 points respectively. Barth made all nine free-throw attempts.

The Ladybirds made 19-of-50 shots for 38 percent including 7-of-19 from three-point range for 37 percent. They shot free throws better making 11-of-13 for 85 percent.

Highlands faces Cooper (9-4) on Thursday in Fort Thomas. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Fort Thomas Matters Sports: Tough Road Losses

I got to witness a good one with this match-up. Exciting game, lot's of lead changes, both teams with opportunities to extend leads, last possession opportunity for both and last second heroics........On Holy Cross side, they received a good all around effort from entire team. Tucker shook off early struggles handling the ball to create scoring opportunities as the game progressed. She and McClendon were able to create some dribble/drive baskets and/or lofts to the "bigs" early. HHS stopped the penetration better in second half but did not have answer (or size) to combat Chames/Thomas down low as the both did a good job turning for layups +1.

HHS was able to stay close with Jenna Martin carrying load early and nice D on Tucker as well. Team played nice defense out on floor but inside was a match-up nightmare despite sagging/help defense as HC was able to get baskets low whenever they seemed to need one. Barth struggled early, not finishing at basket and a couple of frustration fouls in first half. She showed up big in 4th Q and lead them back from a ten point deficit late.

Sequence at end got wild as Barth dove on loose ball and got TO to gain possession. HHS converted possession to tie game with under a minute. HC looked to maybe go for last possession but Martin earned a 5 sec call against Tucker to give HHS last possession. HHS moved ball to create matchup against Thomas but Macke switched and with slight of hand created TO and layup with 4 sec left for W.

Ironically, HHS saved game at the time with Barth TO but were left with none in last possession that possibly would have helped them.

Great game.....huge win for HC as they set up for their home stretch. HHS has to regroup with tough games remaining. This would be a great rematch in a regional, could be different dynamic on a bigger floor but HC earned this one!

Great and fair recap. High basketball IQ's on that last play on both sides ... I thought HC made a good decision in preventing the game from coming down to a last second shot by Barth or Martin.
