Fern Creek

Featured Replies

For those who know a lot about Louisville basketball, tell me a little about Fern Creek. They obviously have a very good team this season but I don't recall them being one of the historical powerhouse programs in the Derby City. When I was growing up, the 6th and 7th regions dominated HS basketball with schools like Male, Ballard, PRP, Central, Valley, and Eastern being regulars in the state final fours. More recently, Trinity has been a juggernaut , as well.

Is this the best start in the history of Fern Creek or have there been others like this one? How have they been able to burst onto the scene this year as one of the state's best? I would love to hear a little history of this school and what kind of success they've enjoyed in the past. Thanks.

Fern Creek has had small patches of success over the years. But most of the neighborhood success went to Moore. When Schooler got the job (in his 4th year) he was able to fast track his success a little by getting most of a certain AAU team to take advantage of JCPS's open enrollment policy. Those kids are now juniors. Take that, along with the transfer of senior Chance Moore, and that's why they're at the point they're at. They should make a run at Rupp this year, and have an even better chance next year. After that, it's anyone's guess.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe I went to a tournament game @ Bellarmine a few yrs back and Quentin Snider was playing on Fern creek's varsity in 8th grade.

I really like Fern Creeks team this yr, they're fun to watch and hope they make a run @ Rupp for the big one

You are correct. Snider played varsity for Fern Creek as an 8th grader. Then enrolled at Eastern for his freshman year, but showed up at Ballard just before school started his freshman year.

Glad you asked this because I've been wondering the same thing myself.

Great minds... once again. :)

I'm forever trying to learn as much as I can about all the regions of the state and which teams in them are typically the strong ones, and for me Fern Creek has just never been on my radar when discussing the 6th Region, and I too have been wondering how all of the sudden they're the cream of the crop, and especially of a strong region such as the 6th.

Open enrollment In Jefferson County creates an opportunity for a drastic turnaround if everything comes together with coaches and players. In the case of Fern Creek, Coach Schooler took the head coaching role at Fern Creek one season before the 2018 class entered high school. This team has been in great part comprised of players in the 2018 class. 5 or 6 wanted to play together as they had played youth ball for many years. Several of those young men started as freshman, and several others played JV and are coming into the rotation. A transfer like Chance Moore has been a huge addition. It has sort of been the perfect storm.

I bet there's a nice story hidden there somewhere

He played at JTown as a 7th grader. His family lived near Fern Creek, so that's why he was able to do that at those schools. But yeah, the sudden switch to Ballard from Eastern was interesting.
