The Mustangs youth and varsity inexperience surfaced last night as the Newport Wildcats went on a 15-2 run from late in the third quarter to early fourth quarter, opening up an insurmountable lead of 51-31.

 

The Mustangs were led by Junior Zach Hamberg with 17 points on the night and was our only double-figure scorer.

 

Newport had four score in double-figures led by Mekell Burries with 15, Donnie Miller and Tahj Harding with 14 each, and Makhi McGuire with 11.

 

The Wildcats improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Mustangs are looking for their first victory in two outings.

 

The Brossart JVs won 46-35 as Sophomore Tyler MacDonald led all scorers with 19, as the Mustang JVs even their season record at 1-1.

Newport has the same youth, and varsity inexperience that you speak of with Brossart. Three of their top 4 scorers you mentioned are sophomores. 4 of their top 7 played little to no varsity last season. Newports defense really got after it and took Kremer, Donnelly, and Schumacher out of any rhythm. I believe they had a combined 10 points. On the other end, Newport shared the ball and found the basket quite a bit in the second half.

 

Good early season matchup. Newport has Silver Grove next. Brossart is on to St. Patrick. Good luck to both as the season continues.

Sophomore Tahj Harden was impressive in the win. If they can get production from a Big like him throughout the year, they will be tough. Their young guard trio (#1, #2, #4) will for sure improve as they get more experience & stronger. Each can shoot it & get to the lane off the bounce.
