I will never understand why some on the left (not all but some) think Castro is somehow a good guy. The guy was a ruthless dictator who had MANY killed and jailed who disagreed with him and there are many on the left who like Castro more than Trump or Pence...just amazes me...

 

It's the same fools that joined the American Communist Party in the 40s while willfully ignorant of everything going on there. Then when the truth came out in the 50s they went "Gulags? No that's a capitalist lie! Wait it's real? Oh no I was never REALLY a communist."

 

That said, I almost actually applaud Castro for using the method of forcing folks into defection to consolidate power rather than the murderous purges of so many who took power like he did.

 

The bar for brutal dictators is pretty low.

At this time of Fidel Castro’s passing, we extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people. We know that this moment fills Cubans - in Cuba and in the United States - with powerful emotions, recalling the countless ways in which Fidel Castro altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the Cuban nation. History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.

 

For nearly six decades, the relationship between the United States and Cuba was marked by discord and profound political disagreements. Why should we respect Fidel Castro?

 

I said "almost supportive". Castro was a terrible person. Doesn't matter how anyone tries to spin it.

Liberals go crazy if Trump doesn't condemn Putin everytime he is asked about him. Yet it is ok to "be respectful" of the awful Castro.

It's a fun game we all play. The left pretends like communist governments aren't all terrible and the right pretends like authoritarian dictators aren't all terrible. Then we grimace at each other and forget what we were talking about in the first place.

I would argue every communist regime this world has seen , was also authoritarian.

 

But I would agree that both sides are hypocrites. It's just funny to see some defend this statement from Obama after spending the last few weeks demanding Trump to condemn every crazy that comes out of the woodwork.

I guess those thousands and thousands killed by firing squads over the years decided not to defect and to just be shot. Some estimates put the number rounded up and killed by the Castro regime at somewhere between 10,000 but more likely approaching 100,000.
