Top Coaching Candidates

Featured Replies

If you're Texas or LSU, who is on your short list of top coaching candidates?

1. Tom Herman

2. Jumbo Fisher (Only applies to LSU)

3. PJ Fleck

4. Les Miles

5. Greg Schiano

In all honesty, Herman is likely going to Texas.

I think I'd go get Mike Leach if I'm Baylor or Oregon. Might even think about him at LSU, but Jimbo would be a great fit at LSU.

PJ Fleck is too unknown for a great job IMO. Let him go to one of the smaller openings and prove his worth. Even Urban Meyer didn't go straight from the MAC to a top 10 job.

Miles and Schiano are uninspiring hires. Might work at Baylor with what they have going on, but not going to cut it at a real high profile job, from a PR standpoint.

Isn't Jim Tressel's show-cause up this year?

If I'm UC I absolutely try to get Greg Schiano from Ohio State.

Yes

Mike Leach is probably a good fit for Oregon or Baylor, but I'm not sure what the better job is Baylor or Wazzu? Before all of the scandal stuff happened it would have been Baylor easy, now I'm not sure. Miles may be uninspiring, but he will be a steal if he gets a job anywhere not named Purdue. I'm shocked to see all of the sources saying he is seriously interested in that job. Schiano is a wild card. He had success at Rutgers which no one else really has had. He coached at the next level, unsuccessfully, but he did coach there so the experience gained is invaluable. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a more high profile job than UC.

If Notre Dame comes open, and I think it will, Schiano would have to be a front-runner IMO.

Yep, Tress is a great coach. He makes you want to pull your hair out a lot of the time, but great coach nonetheless. I honestly think he is content up at Youngstown. Now the guy up at Youngstown that could draw interest is Bo Pelini. Lots of schools would build statues for guys that go 9-4 every year.

Schiano is a great coach, but is that enough of wow hire for the fan base to get behind?

They'll get behind it when he starts winning at the high level he would there...

Another interesting name, Lane Kiffin. Where does he go? If Herman goes to Texas and Jimbo stays put, Do they offer Kiffin at LSU before Orgeron? Maybe if Jimbo does leave FSU, does Kiffin fit in over at FSU? Oregon? Baylor? He's going to get a lot of calls this offseason. Does he answer the phone?

As a Big time FSU guy. I want NOTHING to do with Lane Kiffin! Nothing. If JF leaves, LK wouldn't even be a consideration for me but unfortunately I'm not the AD.

I don't see why anyone would want anything to do with Kiffin. But he'll be a head coach somewhere next year. I would be shocked if FSU didn't at least take an interest in him. They'll go after an offensive guy to try and keep what Jimbo had going. I still don't think Jimbo leaves, so this is hypothetical.
