November 16, 20169 yr Lobbyist: "Congressman, we don't need no stinkin' reforms. You need JOBS in your district, right? This new privately-run prison can bring 1,000 jobs and you'll walk into re-election." There is absolutely NO incentive for reform with private prisons. Way more districts without them than with them, why don't those other congressmen fight for what's right? Again, don't blame the prison...blame DC.

Who is blaming the private enterprise? Of course it's the politicians that are to blame. They allow the private enterprise's desire for profit (the correct desire, by the way) to affect policy/law that has a negative impact on too many people.

Seems like everyone blames industrial prison complex for laws passed by Congress and state legislatures. Yes they lobby, but it still takes elected officials.

Only the govt is to blame. The private prison is doing what they are paid to do (although I'd have a hard time sleeping at night knowing I put a provision in a contract that said the prison has to be 90% filled). It's a TERRIBLE concept.

You seem to act like if it gets down to 85% they rush out and round people up to arrest and convict :lol2: All that 90% limit does is it means the transfer of prisoners from state prisons to cheaper private ones and along the way save taxpayer money.

Again, when you have private business in the ear promising jobs you will get law designed to fill prisons instead of law designed to protect society. I'm struggling to see how you can't see that's a bad idea and un-American.
November 16, 20169 yr Totally against prisons for profit. No incentive for rehabilitation. Terrible idea and probably something that is lining the pockets of some elected officials.

I never said it was good, I only commented on your hyperbole that made it seem like someone had to rush out and arrest, indict, arraign, convict and sentence someone if the magic number dropped below an agreed upon %.
November 16, 20169 yr Totally against prisons for profit. No incentive for rehabilitation. Terrible idea and probably something that is lining the pockets of some elected officials. When I'm not on my phone I'll try to find it, but I think they do get an incentive to train and rehab prisoners. Again if they went away tomorrow I'd be fine with it, it'll just cost us more tax dollars. Fix education in rural America, inner cities, add cheap vocational type training available for all and come down like the fist of Zeus on criminal enterprises in all of our communities...do that and we won't have a need for a lot of the prison beds we currently have in this country.
