Franklin-Simpson 10-0

Best Wins: South Warren, greenwood, and Russellville

Loses: None

Highlights: The 2 big catches by Hunter Janes to win against Greenwood and South Warren

OP: Josiah Tobey is a do it all RB and WR. He reminds me of UKs Boom Williams in terms of speed.

DP: Cade Harvey keeps getting tackles

STP: Maddie Alexander has kept her cool and has been really consistent in the field goal game. Also send is the only girl to score in FSHS history

One word: Undefeated

Russell Red Devils (9-1, 5-0 in district)

 

Biggest win: 29-28 over Raceland. After three consecutive easy district wins, Russell needed to find out what it was made of. Raceland is a top 4 team in 1A and a big rival. The game was an instant classic and Russell now enters the playoffs with a great deal of momentum.

 

Biggest loss: 8-7 against Ashland. Russell was struggling mightily on offense early in the season. Ashland always provides the Devils with a stiff early season test and big game atmosphere. The Tomcats drove 98 yards in the final minutes to win the game.

 

Two highlights: Trailing 6-0 in the season opener, Russell needed to find some offense in the 4th quarter against Greenup County. QB Austin Smith found WR Landon Brewer in the end zone from 23 yards out to give Russell a lead they would not relinquish.

 

Leading 29-28, Drey Boehm picked off Raceland QB Nathaniel Davidson at the goal line with mere seconds left to play to preserve a Russell win in the regular season finale.

 

Offensive player: RB Nick Conley (6'0", 210lbs) Strong, tough runner with good speed. He's Russell's second all-time leading rusher with about 4500 career yards and 60+ TDs. He's a difference maker.

 

Defensive player: CB Drey Boehm (6'0", 180 lbs) The aforementioned Boehm has 6 INTs on the year. He's a shutdown corner who welcomes the big stage.

 

Special Teams player: Also Drey Boehm. He's got multiple kick return TDs in his career and is very elusive in the open field.

 

The Red Devils struggled on offense early in the season and were carried by a defense that has surrendered just 9 ppg. They're starting to click on offense and appear to be hitting their stride at just the right time. Russell gets a 1st round bye before hosting the winner of Pike County Central/West Carter. Barring any huge upsets, a showdown with Belfry likely awaits the Devils in the regional championship.

Mercer County Titans

Best win, IMO, was the Taylor county game at TC. 28-20 was the final. The Titans controlled this game from about midway thru the 1st quarter on. Big game from Tanner Robins in this one. Going off memory, I believe he went over 100 yards receiving with 2tds.

 

Worst loss, I think all of Titan Nation would agree on the East Jessamine game. Not only did Mercer come in as a favorite, they had two or three chances to put together a drive and win this one. This game also proved to cost the Titans a 1 seed in the playoffs!

 

Offensive player of the year, IMO, goes to Donald Smith. Although not playing in a couple and not at full strength in the East loss, when he has been healthy, this guy has lit up opponents run defense. He is always a threat to take one to the house! Leads the team in rushing yards per game and total touchdowns, 66yds and 13 touchdowns.

 

Defensive player of the year goes to Grayson Blevins. Whenever the Titans needed a big stop, this guy always seemed to be the one getting it.

Grayson leads the team in tackles with 123 with 63 of those of the solo variety. Plays the lb position as good as anyone I've seen in high school!

 

My special teams representative will be Gunnar Gillis. I've not seen the stats for Gunnar's punts this year, but I've witnessed several 50 yarders. The fact that Gunnar is also a very accomplished starting QB, keeps the returns in check, since the defense is left guessing as to rather he will pass, or punt. Gunnar has had a very good year passing with 1347 yards and 11 touchdowns, with only 4 ints.

 

 

I think coach B has these boys playing their best football at just the right time! I look forward to kicking off the playoffs this Friday against Knox central, the team who just happens to be who ended the Titans season, a year ago! I'm excited to see how far this group can go!

1A PAINTSVILLE TIGERS

 

10-0!!!!

 

 

Best win- Raceland 27-21 OT

 

Worst Loss NONE

 

2 Highlights. (1) Morris to Allen in the end zone against Bourbon to go up 1 for the win! (2)Paintsville's final Defensive Stand in OT to STOP Raceland for the win!

 

Offensive Player- (RB) Kent Phelps (QB) D MO!

 

Defensive Player- Dalton Daniels/Tyrese Allen

Hard enough to cut it to 2 much less 1.

 

Special Teams- Brett Bartley!

 

Coach Joe Chirico in a short time as Head Coach has brought this program from almost non existent to a Program with back to back 10-0 seasons and a legit 1A state title threat! The motivation and craftiness he has brought to this program shows what a true talent he has for the game and being able to teach it at a high school level! This is an undefeated 1A PAINTSVILLE TEAM that got that State Semi taste in their mouth last year and only got stronger this year and looking for a deeper run!! Look for them in BG on December 2!

Belfry Pirates (9-1)

Biggest Win: vs. 4A #1 Johnson Central. Pirates overcame early adversity and an excellentt opponent and made the big plays to win the game in an electric environment

 

Worst Loss: at #1 4A Knoxville Catholic, TN- Belfry travelled to take on a Nationally Ranked opponent with high end talent and fumbled the ball away and could not stop the Irish's All-American WR. Outside of the fumbles and deep passes Belfry did move it well and held their run game in check.

 

 

2 Highlights you took from regular season:

1. Belfry avenged their only loss from 2016 by handling Cabell Midland, WV at home. Midland has since went on to become the hottest team in WV.

 

2. Ryan Jessie's TD Catch vs. Lawrence County. Jessie's father had a bad heart attack at the start of the season and the Junior receiver earned Play of the Week honors with a ridiculous catch in the back of the endzone for his first career TD.

Belfry has struggled with nagging injuries all season and have struggled to get their entire starting lineup together for an extended stretch. Will timing be effected when they have to take on Russell (9-1) and Corbin (9-1) in successive weeks?

Much is made of Belfry's star O-linemen so I am going to give credit to a very under appreciated part of the Pirate program over the past 4 years, FB Andrew Fletcher.

 

Fletcher has bee Mr. Consistency at the FB position and was last year's 3A Championship Game MVP. There is nothing flashy about Fletcher but he gets the job done and always gets positive yards. He is a very unselfish player who is always getting his blocks and is vital to Belfry's success in the run game.

Going the same direction, Austin Hall has been a 4-year starter for Belfry at DE and does not get the respect he deserves. Hall is an exceptionally disciplined DE who rarely loses contain or misses key tackles. Hall is very gifted at dropping in coverage and has great speed.

 

 

Give us a positive report on a special teams player on your squad:

Grayson Cook deserves some praise for how he played this season while Woolum missed the good portion due to a soft tissue injury. Cook, only a Freshman, was consistently accurate on XP's and did a good job in kickoff duties as well.

Belfry has a chance to fulfill history entering the 2016 post-season. This Senior Class has never finished with less than a Championship since they were in 8th Grade, and many of these guys have been 4 year starters and key contributors on the Belfry Title teams. With Corbin, the clear cut #2 team, potentially awaiting it can be argued noone will have a tougher path than Belfry with Russell playing great football. Belfry will be tested and will have a clear target on their chest, but if they can rise to the challenge they can go down in historical terms.

Beechwood Tigers (9-1)

Biggest Win: Covington Holy Cross

Holy Cross has some of the best athletes in N.Ky but Beechwood used a great gameplan to expose the Indians suspect secondary. The Tigers hung on for the win 40-33.

Biggest Loss: (4a) Covington Catholic

Despite playing a very stellar first half against the colonels, the wheels on the bus came off and the Colonels blew the game open on a series of bad plays by the Tigers.

2 Highlights from the Season: 1). Watching Game to Game as the Tigers defense got better and better. 2). The offense has had to catch up to the defense but is well balanced.

Area Of Concern: Big, Fast athletic running backs give the undersized Tigers trouble. (See Pikeville last years State Championship & Holy Cross Indians this yr.)

Offensive Player: Sr. RB Aiden Justice

The undersized but Speedy Justice is a dual threat and true home run hitter for the Tigers. He is able to grind out yards or take it to the house. High IQ makes him a must see player for the Tigers!

Defensive Player: Jr. CB Elijah McKenney

Elijah easily is one of the best DB's in N.Ky but also statewide. He has built upon a successful Soph. campaign(Int. in last yrs. title game) and tied for the State Lead with 6Ints. A tad small but great technique, tenacity, and High IQ allow him to shut down opposing WR's.

Special Teams: Jr.RB/KR James Davis

James is a true speedster with the ability to go to the house everytime he touches the ball! Uses speed and passion to run with purpose. A dual threat and I look for him to be a difference maker in the playoffs.

 

Outlook: The Tigers have turned what many thought would be a rebuilding year into a year that has them poised to make a deep playoff run! The Tigers are looking to return to Title Game and bring the trophy back home to N.Ky. It will take a total team effort and focus but we are ready for the task at hand.
