October 28, 20169 yr Anyone remember this one as well as I do? 1984 Reds-Cubs Fair/Foul Homerun Ball controversy. Ron Cey hits a ball that Steve Ripley says is a 3-run homer. The Reds' go ballistic, the umpire crew meets to discuss the call, and crew chief Bob Engle overrules the rookie umpire and signals foul. Cubs manager Jim Frey and third base coach Don Zimmer go crazy. And then a fight ensues between the teams. Mario Soto loses his ever-lovin' mind after a fan throws a beer at him. Harry Carey and Steve Stone narrate the madness. Harry is worried about Jody Davis, who appeared to be injured in the fight. Fun stuff. Many thought they were at least partially responsible for inciting crowd violence that night. BTW, Eric Gregg, who was part of this crew, was third base umpire during the Davis-Knight fight.
October 28, 20169 yr Author I was 11 when this one happened. I was crazy mad at Bud Harrelson. Hated him even more after we lost the series.
November 1, 20169 yr The maddest I ever saw Peter Edward Rose--- Apr. 30, 1988. Two words: DAVE PALLONE !!! I remember listening to Marty and Joe on the radio. They were excoriating Pallone. Many thought they were at least partially responsible for inciting crowd violence that night. BTW, Eric Gregg, who was part of this crew, was third base umpire during the Davis-Knight fight. I had tickets for this game and didn't go. Many forget that there was 1 or 2 brawls in this game as well. Browning hit Teufel and Strawberry came shooting out of the dugout. Teufel was a favorite target of the Reds pitchers.

November 1, 20169 yr Reds and Braves went at it a few times in the 80s as well. Here is Soto/Washington. There was another fight where Gullickson gave up a few bombs and then nailed Andres Thomas (I think) and didn't even wait for him to come out. Gully walked right to the plate and it was on.
