August 28, 201610 yr Site your own story on bands /groups you missed out on "back in the day", that you discovered long after they hit the seen...........here's mine. Last weekend while checking out videos on youtube, I came across a tune by the British hard rock band Thunder titled "Dirty Love". As soon as I saw the title I seemed to remember the tune, so I pulled it up and....yes sir, that was the tune I remember, it reached #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and # 10 on the Mainstream Rock chart in 1990. So I decided to checkout their Wikipedia page to see if they had any other chart success and if they were still around. Come to find out that they had great chart success in England, but only one other hit in the U.S. with "Love Walked In" (#31 Mainstream Rock chart). To make along story short, I decided to checkout some of their hits from the English charts and.......WOW!!!!! How in the world did I miss out on these guys? I was blown away by the tunes I was hearing. Lead guitarist, Luke Morley, writes most all the music and lyrics, and they have some very cool riffs and hooks to go along with some great lyrical material. Unfortunately for them, they came along in the early 90's when grunge and hip-hop were all the rave and got lost in the mix, but still they kept turning out great music. Lead singer Danny Bowes sounds today, like he sounded 25 years ago, and the bands is still together (except for the original bass player) touring in Europe and Australia. They have also done 3 cover tunes, a rocked up version of The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'", The Rolling Stone's "Gimme Shelter", and a #1 hit in England, Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music". Granted, we all have different musical likes and dislikes, so you might or might not agree with my views. However, give some of these tunes a try and see if they are up your alley. Great hard rock ballad This song rocks! Thunder - River Of Pain - YouTube Thunder - Stand Up - YouTube #1 in England #1 in England, and got DLG 3.0 singing this one already. Cover songs I'm probably going a little @B-Ball-fanesqe with the information overload, but what the heck. :lol2: Maybe @ADopted ADmiral or @FarBeyondDriven has heard of these guys? August 28, 201610 yr The L.A. band Mother Tongue released their self titled first release in 1994. I stumbled upon that release probably something like 7 to 10 years after its release date just by chance. To this day I have never spoken to or know of another person who has ever heard of this band. This baffled me because I would have thought that they'd have an audience here somewhere having a blend of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine with old school vibes of Jimi Hendrix all rolled up in a nasty hard and heavy funk/blues/rock package. Time has passed since I really dug listening to that first release and have come to find that they have something like 4 more releases since, that I still need to check out, and outside of L.A. they've continued to have an audience in mostly Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. Looking at their entire tour diary from their beginnings it doesn't even look like they ever tried to make an impact in the states because outside of playing in L.A. they never played any dates elsewhere within the whole country, but early on they made their rounds throughout Europe, and their sound caught the attention of a cult following within the aforementioned countries. Broken is a hot jam off of their first release:
August 28, 201610 yr A couple of other standout tracks from Mother Tongue's pretty solid first release are: Damage
August 28, 201610 yr About a year ago I stumbled upon a tune playing "Youtube Hopscotch" that I liked by a guy named Guy Blakeslee who I had previously never heard of before. Doing a little background on him it turns out that he has just begun to release solo material while he's put out a number of other releases as the front singer/guitarist of a psychedelic throwback hard rockin' trio name The Entrance Band with former A Perfect Circle female bassist Paz Lenchantin. They're not from "back in the day" exactly, but it looks as if their ship has sailed, and I wasn't aware of them the short time they were afloat. Edited August 28, 201610 yr by B-Ball-fan
August 28, 201610 yr Rodriguez a Mexican singer/songwriter from Detroit who is now 74, put out a couple of albums in the early 70's that went unnoticed in the states, and unbeknownst to him for years he had developed a major following in South Africa and Australia. Rumor was that he had committed suicide in the 70's while he became as popular as Bob Dylan or Cat Stevens, and in 1997 his daughter discovered a fan page of his online making her father aware that he had a following that he knew nothing about. This story came to my attention in 2012 when 60 Minutes did a piece on this guy bringing attention to the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" named after one of his songs, and related to this whole unusual story. Intrigued, I went to see the documentary, and then caught this guy live in Columbus while he toured after the popularity of the movie, and notoriety that he was achieving regarding the novelty of his story. All of these years after leaving his initial short lived stint in the music business, he worked low paying blue collar jobs in Detroit.
August 28, 201610 yr If I didn't already overkill Mother Tongue enough, here's another hot standout track from their first release that I forgot to post.

I brought Thunder up on a similar thread quite awhile ago on BGP, but no one really paid attention. I discovered them the same way...heard "Dirty Love" on Sirius and started investigating. "Love Walked In" was the song I remember from their heyday, more so than "Dirty Love". Here is one of my favorite songs of thier's.
August 28, 201610 yr I hated Cheap Trick when I was a kid but absolutely love them now. I'm notorious for listening to particular artists, finding out what their influences were, then digging those artists up. It's how I discovered The Louvin Brothers, Big Star, Billie Joe Shaver and Nick Drake, among many others.
