BigVMan23 Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Filling out paperwork to get mine. We got a new vehicle at church that requires one (thank God we don't have to drive those nasty beat up 15 passenger vans all the time now). Seems to be quite a bit to doing this. Not sure what I thought the process would be but seems more to it than what I thought there might be. Going to get my physical tomorrow, at least I got that scheduled quickly. Ho long it will take to review all my paperwork and schedule a written and driving test I don't know.

Not sure what I thought the process would be but seems more to it than what I thought there might be. Going to get my physical tomorrow, at least I got that scheduled quickly. Ho long it will take to review all my paperwork and schedule a written and driving test I don't know. I have had a Class A CDL for 25 years. I have been trying to add a passenger and school bus endorsements for the last 8 months. Granted I have not been in a huge hurry to get this done but it has been a fiasco at every step. The first time I went to take the written test the testing facility had just changed the hours you could test for CDL's. The next time I went they told me I had to file a form that states that I am changing my CDL. On the third trip I took both endorsement tests and passed. I drug my feet on going to take the driving test and my 6 month permit expired. I called right before it expired and was told I simply needed to come in to renew my permit for 11 bucks....no big deal. WRONG. When I went to renew the permit I was not allowed because my DOT card expires within the next 6 months... which is before the new permit would expire. So now I have to go get a physical in order to renew the permit. And if I ever get my P and S endorsements I will have to get a physical every year instead of every 2. I have also talked to several bus drivers that had to take the driving test several times because the examiners are very picky (as they should be). Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.
ColonelCrazy Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has a very informative website. You might consider checking out their FAQs: https://ask.fmcsa.dot.gov/app/answers/list/session/L3RpbWUvMTQ3MjA4OTE5My9zaWQvY01rcmRXWW0%3D/c/24,29
BigVMan23 Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 Two steps closer. Passed the general knowledge test and the passenger endorsement test (had to take that one twice...guess I really did need to study some:sour:). Got my CDL permit today and scheduled the driving test for the 22nd. Have a couple of weeks to drive the new bus and get familiar with it, which I definitely need to do before the driving test.
All Blue Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 If its anything like getting class As a lot more to it then just driving. Make sure you know how to do your pre-trip inspection.
BigVMan23 Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 If its anything like getting class As a lot more to it then just driving. Oh I know, have to show vehicle knowledge, inspection, etc. Which is why I have to get familiar with the vehicle, it's brand new and I know little about it.
THUNDERBIRDS Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Have my Class B's. I got them about 5 years ago for Work. Noway 75% of the Driver's with Class A's that were Grandfathered in 20 so years ago could pass the General Knowledge exam today. That's a scary thought!

THUNDERBIRDS Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 The Mandatory Electronic Log Device compliance that goes into effect in Sept 2017 will thin the Herd for sure. Most drivers won't be able to stay in Compliance with Log Hours. Mark my word! The trucking business will be a very valuable asset to have in about 2-3 years. The regulations will make it almost impossible to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle. The ones that survive will have a Upper hand on the Economy!
