Here's a feel good story. A 5th year walk on player receives news he is now a scholarship athlete at a team function. They were playing a game show and surprised him with the news. The end of the video shows him calling his parents.

Here is a nice article about it.

Ball State walk-on receives scholarship in the most absurd way possible | FOX Sports

With college football camps opening up across the country over the last week, we’ll be inundated with all kinds of information from camps, from practice reports, to pictures, videos and more.

Still, there may be nothing cooler than what we got from Ball State on Monday.

That’s because in a team meeting over the weekend, they decided to play some weird game of ‘Price is Right’ which, they appropriately enough called ‘The Cardinal is Right.’ The game is almost like Pictionary in that players had to turn their back to the screen, and were given a word, and teammates had to help them figure it out.

At least that’s what they were doing, until fifth-year walk-on senior Kyle Seger got up to the stage. In the video below, you’ll see him turn his back to the screen --- and just as he does, the phrase ‘You have earned a full scholarship’ pops up on the screen.

That’s right, the former walk-on is a walk-on no more. Watch below as his teammates go ABSOLUTELY BONKERS when it flashes up on the screen.

What’s might be even better is new coach Mike Neu’s explanation of the decision to give Seger the scholarship. Here’s what he said:

You young guys, you all need to know this man. Since I arrived here in January, I’ve heard nothing but glowing reports, glowing remarks from everybody here on campus, treating people with respect, strength and conditioning staff. You talk about doing everything everyone could ever ask of a young man, he’s done.

He’s the first guy on the list when you talk about putting in the work, the extra time, first guy in the building, last guy to leave, couldn’t have happened to a better guy. He’s earned it. You young guys need to know that.

The video concludes with Seger emotionally telling his parents that he has received a scholarship.

I’ve got to say, for all the discussion about what’s ‘wrong’ with college sports, this once again proves that there are plenty of good things that happen on campus as well.

I LOVE these stories. Really believe that those walk ons that continue to play through college with no financial aid or stardom really do it for the best reason- love of the game.
