DerbyCity Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Question - Kid played varsity for a school as freshman - Family moving to a different location after divorce - Kid played AAU for assistant coach at the proposed new school one summer - Transfer allowed or denied?
Voice of Reason Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Divorce and move should cause it to be allowed. Is the old school going to challenge it? If they don't challenge it, I will be very surprised if it isn't approved.
DerbyCity Posted July 26, 2016 Author Posted July 26, 2016 What about the exception to the transfer rule (Bylaw 6) - Section 3 of the Bylaw states that "a waiver of the period of ineligibility is not required to be granted for those students satisfying one of the exceptions in Sec 2... if a student participates on a nonschool (i.e. AAU, American Legion, club settings, summer program, etc.) team that is affiliated with or coached by a coach associated in that same sport at a member school and the student then transfers to the member school where a coach is employed (paid or volunteer at any level)" ?
sumoroyal Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Everything is granted in Kentucky. If a player can go to school on a Thursday and play for another school on Friday, then everything goes.
coachforlife Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 (edited) I thought change of address trumped everything.....but wasnt aware of AAU connection info you have presented. Anyone have any previous examples? Edited July 26, 2016 by coachforlife
lawildcat Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Change of residence trumps AAU coach connection. Or maybe it's all one big plot to get this kid at the school of the coach. Yeah, I'm sure he talked the parents into divorcing to get his nefarious plan off the ground...
maysvilleky Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Did this transfer end up at GRC? She might as well join the crowd...I think they will have 3 or 4 this year.

"Is not required" is a key part of this exception. In the end, physical change of residence of custodial is the key, irrespective of whether that student athlete played summer ball / AAU for the gaining school coach. High School coaches could do themselves a big favor and take themselves out of coaching AAU ball during the off season....it truly eliminates a lot of issues and cleans it up nicely for the student athletes and their parents.
