May 31, 201610 yr Hurrah to the "knee jerk" America is weaker posts. Keep the zombie-robot posts coming. For those that choose to examine it, many schools have recognized that naming the top 2 GPAs in a large school system can be difficult. Start with the proposition that 1-5% of any student population may have 4 yrs. of straight As and you're now stratifying those with Advanced and AP classes. Add those schools with either block scheduling OR an "early bird" option and in order to keep ahead of the contenders students are forced to take 7 classes with as many 5 or 6 AP classes their JR and SR years just to have a chance. Finally, add in scheduling quirks which put a kid in the position of having to take a regular or advance section of a class because the AP version is only offered 1x and it is opposite a mandatory English or Math AP class that is also only offered 1x. If we were truly separating the best students and ranking them 1-2 or beyond, I'd say go for it. We're not. We're seeing which kids (or kids' parents) want to work the system the best to be able to put that achievement on a resume in many instances. Not good for the student. Not good for the school. Not good for the colleges trying to admit / make scholarship decisions.
