May 25, 201610 yr With the way the electoral college will like shake out a vote for Johnson helps Clinton more than it does Trump. Trump needs every vote in the swing states. Trump isn't a great candidate but he looks like Teddy Roosevelt compared to HRC.False, my vote for Johnson would go to Clinton if forced to choose between Trump or Clinton. Also, KY is NOT a swing state.
May 25, 201610 yr False, my vote for Johnson would go to Clinton if forced to choose between Trump or Clinton. Also, KY is NOT a swing state. You misread what I said or I didn't write clearly. Never said Kentucky was a swing state. Just said Trump needs to win those to have a chance at all. What I'm saying about 3rd party is that Trump is the one that needs votes. If you waste a vote on Johnson, that one vote carries more weight for Trump than for Hillary in a swing state like Florida because I think he has room to make up in most swing states. Kentucky isn't a swing, Trump will win it and it doesn't matter who you decide to vote for here in the grand scheme of things.
May 25, 201610 yr False, my vote for Johnson would go to Clinton if forced to choose between Trump or Clinton. Also, KY is NOT a swing state. And I think that's what a lot of people aren't understanding with this election. A lot of people who are considering a 3rd party vote aren't deciding between Trump and the 3rd party. A large # of them, probably the majority IMO, are deciding between Hillary and the 3rd party.
May 25, 201610 yr http://bluegrasspreps.com/kentucky-national-politics/so-when-is-321562.html#post5828815 Some math to back up my claim. In KY all electoral votes go to the candidate who receives the most. IN 2012, for Obama to have received the most votes and change the outcome of KY's election 219,416 more votes would have been needed. In KY 2% of the vote from a previous election is needed to qualify a party as a political organization. At this stage that party would have instant ballot-access. 10% is needed to qualify them as a political party and thus that party is eligible to host a primary. Ballot-access is a major hindrance to 3rd party candidates and not having to go through that process would help pave the way for a viable 3rd party. Gary Johnson needed 18,881 votes to get to 2% and 162,658 votes to get to 10%...

Kentucky isn't a swing, Trump will win it and it doesn't matter who you decide to vote for here in the grand scheme of things. By definition a swing state is a state that can go either way. So I'd think both candidates NEED votes in that state. Your fallacy is thinking that every vote for Gary Johnson -- or any 3rd party candidate -- would have otherwise went to Trump.

Your fallacy is thinking that every vote for Gary Johnson -- or any 3rd party candidate -- would have otherwise went to Trump. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that a 3rd party vote is like not voting at all. Lower turnout will be better for Clinton IMO. Doesn't matter which of the two you prefer as a second choice.

If @formerkywrestler and I are both voting and our votes are either going to Hillary or Johnson, wouldn't you as a Trump supporter, rather we cast our vote for Johnson?
May 25, 201610 yr To add, the two party stranglehold is in place because the citizens have allowed it. The most powerful tool we have is to vote in a different direction. Even if a Gary Johnson receives a significantly smaller percentage, it may force those in the established two parties to readjust or modify their platforms.

May 25, 201610 yr In 2012 almost 220K of the Kentuckians that voted for Romney would have had to stay at home for Obama to win the state...

If @formerkywrestler and I are both voting and our votes are either going to Hillary or Johnson, wouldn't you as a Trump supporter, rather we cast our vote for Johnson? If you are the only two voting for Johnson you have a point. Trump is helped by a high turnout. Those not voting or voting for a candidate that isn't Trump or Clinton, hurts him more than it does her IMO. I think that most who will vote 3rd party would vote Trump over Clinton. Maybe not in this state, but overall. I think that many Republican Conservatives will potentially do that because of the dislike of Trump by many Republicans. The young voters who like Bernie and dislike Hillary will likely do what many young voters do...stay home. With the electoral college and ballot-access rules that couldn't be further from the truth. The electoral college and plurality make it to where a 3rd party vote is basically not voting at all or at least voting for a candidate that has no shot. If everyone that disliked Trump and HRC went 3rd party that would be one thing, but that would be unprecedented in the history of Democratic elections. Without a huge movement, 3rd Party is a waste of time, at least short term. Make your protest vote if you want but an Elephant or a Donkey will be in office.

I've voted for the LP candidate last two elections. It's not a protest vote. 2. If everyone keeps your mentality it won't change -- but all the people with that mentality will continue to complain about the bad candidates. 3. I don't think you grasp ballot-access rules or the hindrance that puts on 3rd parties. 4. NOWHERE have I said it won't be an elephant or a donkey in office. I just choose to act rather than complain...
May 25, 201610 yr That's what I want to see. Let's hope that percentage keeps climbing higher and maybe we can fix this mess in Washington. I just want everybody to be honest with themselves and admit that the D and R nominees are both crap, and that you will be doing your country a favor by not voting for either of them. Doesn't even really matter if you believe in Johnson's positions one way or another. Cast your protest vote so that the Libertarians get enough of a percentage so that the party has a seat at the adults' table. We already know Hillary and The Donald will make for a terrible president. Why not feel good about your vote for a change? This is where my vote will be going.
