Evansville Mater Dei 21 Owensboro 7

Featured Replies

This game was scoreless until the last minute of the 3rd. Neither team had moved the ball much at all until Mater Dei put together the first good drive of the game and got down to the OHS 4. The Red Devil defense tightened up and held them until 4th down. MD attempted a field goal which was blocked and returned 96 yds by Jameson Johnson. OHS held the lead until midway through the 4th when MD tied the game. MD scored again on their next possession, and finished the scoring on an INT return within the last 2 minutes of the game.

Ugly game to watch as a unbiased fan. Honestly OHS looked to be the better team this night but they really hurt themselves with multiple penalties. They were flagged 6 or 7 times for false starts. Two excellent punt returns (one to inside the 10) were negated due to blocks in the back. OHS would move the ball but have any gains negated by penalty. Offensively OHS has a very long way to go. The offensive line was not very good and run blocking or pass blocking.

Defensively OHS looked great. MD went mostly 3 and out until the end of the 3rd. They started running the screen pass and a few draws which OHS had a lot of trouble with. It looked like OHS had several going both ways and fatigue might have been a factor going into the last quarter. Really did'nt pay attention to how many played but MD dressed quite a bit more players than did OHS. It was extremely hot at the Reitz Bowl tonight.

I really wasn't impressed with Joe Prince's play calling tonight. I felt like Mike Goebel really outcoached him, making adjustment that changed the momentum of the game. OHS looked lost on offense, and had several instances where they had trouble getting the proper personal onto the field. OHS attemted a fake punt on 4th and inches from the MD 31. It was a really poor decision IMO. They had some momentum at the time and probably could have lined up and moved the chains on a QB sneak or FB dive.

It looks like their D will keep them in some games, but unless they find some sort of offense OHS might have trouble fulfiling their lofty expectations heading into the season.

Great recap strike. I came away feeling very dissapointed not only that OHS lost but the way they lost. The Red Devils were their own worst enemy, getting penalites that would negate those huge punt returns, and any forward progress on offense. I wasnt there at the start of the game but I was told MD fumbled a lateral into the end zone were OHS recovered for at touchdown but the play was ruled an incomplete pass. Also later in the game OHS attempted a halfback pass were the receiver was wide open but the pass was overthrown. That probably would have been a TD. As far as the playcalling I TOTALLY AGREE. OHS looked completly out of sync. I think OHS needs to dump the 4 wide one back set and just run the ball out of the "I". Thats the only was OHS moved the ball was by running it. Also I think it would benefit QB Austin Moss more by passing out of the "I" becaue he could take 3 steps and make his reads instead of rolling out. When Moss rolls out the defense closes too quick therefore making it hard for Moss to make his reads. Thats not his fault but the coaches need to see it and adjust to their personel. OHS is going to have to score some points offensively this year or they will be in a dog fight with EVERY TEAM they play. I hope the Red Devils coaches make the adjustments and come back ready next week against Owensboro Catholic.

Everything I've heard is that Owensboro's defense is very good, but that the offense will struggle mightily against good teams. I'd still say the Red Devils are the district favorite.
