Harlan 19 Cawood 7

Featured Replies

One team had a bit of offense; the other didn't. Not pretty, but a hard-fought rivalry game.

Harlan struck early on a long pass that set up the first score (3 minutes in) and stayed shotgun until it was time to eat clock.

Big drive (90 yards or so) took much of the 3rd quarter with Harlan scoring a few plays into the 4th for a 13-7 lead. (PAT blocked)

Cawood had tied the game in the first when QB fumbled then picked it up and somehow ran around right end for about a 45 yard TD.

Interception for Cawood set up a possible great finish at Harlan's 35 (or thereabout), but Cawood was sacked on 4th down with about 5 minutes to go, and Harlan marched down for the clincher as Cawood appeared to fade emotionally at the very end.

Fun game, and it would appear that both teams could improve (a lot of penalties) and have winning seasons.

Very Boring game.......

Harlan's offense to me, Didn't look great, Cawood gave up some plays that shouldn't have been made.

Cawood's offense, Well, They had 11 positions filled, Bout all I can say.

Hope Cawood can improve, Might be another long season.

I would concur, except for having a bit more optimism about the rest of the season for both teams.

I agree with youthcoach. Why be such a wet blanket? These kids put it all out there. Everyone can't be Bell or Belfry. Lets encourage these young folks. Its fine to offer constructive criticism, but if you are bored, watch an NFL game at home.

Never said anything out of the way about either team.....But it was a very boring game, and I stand by what I said.

And by the Way, NFL is really boring. :thumb:

I just think sometimes we can forget that the kids read this forum. Agree on the NFL.:thumb:

Nothing against the Kids, didn't seem like a typical Rival game between Cawood and Harlan.

You're right, Harlan's offense doesn’t seem to be very high powered. However, I will have to take up for coach Donahue on this. I can't remember the last time that Harlan threw for over 150 yds and ran for almost 250. I know from what I have heard that neither team was impressive but 400 yds of offense isn't too horrible. Cawood on the other hand only put up 112 rushing and 39 passing. While I know there were some dropped balls for the Trojans, it sounds like this should have been more of a blow out than what it was if you look at the stats. This can also be attributed to the fact that Harlan throws more than cawood (never thought I would say that). However, Harlan only threw the ball 17 times with only 5 of those passes coming in the second half. Again,

I have to commend coach Donahue on seeing that Cawood's stud (Mikey Hensley) was in the secondary, and completely adjusting his game plan in the second half because of it.

While this has to be a devastating loss for the Trojans (1-6 in last seven meetings) they still can finish with a great season. Hopefully they don't loose control and drive their season into the ground. As for the dragons, they are going to have to step up their ability to get the ball in the end zone before they start playing Evarts, Breathitt, M-boro, Lynn Camp and Somerset this year. Good win though.

I agree with Waggle, Harlan must get better, but there were signs of life throughout the game, and (if you want to look at the game with green goggles), the game was one flag, 1 fumble, and a broken play from 28 or 35 to 0.

Please, not trying to stir at all, because I think Cawood was much improved from last year in intensity throughout the game and in that there was the possibility, at least, for some big plays. Last year, you watched them and knew they were not going to produce much.

Any time a Class A school like Harlan can beat a larger school like Cawood 6 out of 7 years that is pretty impressive. Coach Donahue is one of the best class A coaches in the state in my opinion.

:irked:

Warrior why are you so negative?

Warrior has already explained his comments, read above

Amen! We are just glad that so far, he has resisted moving to a larger school. We love Coach D!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think when Harlan County High is finished :D you might be looking for a new head coach in Green Dragon land.

I agree here. I would rank him in the top 10 in Class A based upon his record, character, and ability to get the most out of the talent before him. His teams reach their maximum level every year, and it is guaranteed that they are prepared for every Friday night opponent. He might be #1 in Class A if you rank "most underrated coaches."
