Not sure where this thread is heading, but the true reason you play in these events is to help the "kids" that play gain some exposure and enjoy the competitive atmosphere. There's nothing like the big time tourneys, but even then those tourneys are designed to let college coaches see the kids. Should a team win and go to the final four or even win it all, it is just that many more games that players can be seen and have the opportunity to shine! Realistically, a lot of players can be on a 3 games and done team and still benefit just as much as the kids that win and go deep in to the tourney. It appears the Patriots have done just that. What more can you ask?????? By the way, there are some players and teams that play up one and two levels and if they should lose early it does not matter. In fact, it actually helps if a 15 year old kid competes in the 17 under division and is able to put up even average numbers imagine the benefits. It really is about helping kids be seen and hoping that a college likes what they see so that the end result is a kid getting a free education and a shot at a better future. The trophy will collect dust, but the education will provide a future!

You DID misunderstand what the parents told you.

The coaching staff of the KY Patriots has never cut a player off the team. Every kid that has left the team left on their own or because their parent took them off the team. This goes all the way back to 4th grade.

The Patriots have never had tryouts or "cut" a single player.

 

The KY Patriots do not play with different players in different tournaments. When they play as the KY Patriots they always play with the full Patriot roster.

 

There have been a few tournaments where some of the Patriot boys played without three or four of their teammates, when this happens, they play as "KY Prep". These tournaments were usually the local BCI tournaments in N. KY.

 

The only other time the Patriots play under a different name is in Nike Tournaments where they play representing Eddie Ford's Nike organization as the "KY Hoopstars East" where they won both the Nike Midwest Regional Middle School Championship in Henderson, KY and the Nike National Middle School Championship in Nashville, TN.

left on their own? Some coach's "cut " players by telling a player they are not

going to get any playing time. Or worse yet not telling them and having them sit on the bench until they get upset enough and " leave on their own".

Yes, because they did leave on their own. I recollect our coaches maybe saying that in certain games, particular kids may not get as much playing time, but that is the nature of select sports and will be true with any high-level AAU team. It isn't rec ball where everyone plays equal amounts in every game. The players who the coaches feel give the team the best chance to win will be in more. Many times, our team has been able to play all 10 kids equally in a game. We have never cut a kid. Once a player is on the team, they are a member until they choose to leave. If a player is not happy with the amount of playing time they have on a particular team, it's in the player and parents' best interests to find a new team. I know plenty of select teams in basketball and other sports who have tryouts each year and cut existing players or move them down to a B team.
