August 2, 200620 yr Loser: Jim Bowden. He can spin it any way he likes now, but when Alfonso Soriano signs with the Yankees this winter, Bowden's failure to trade him could cost him his job. Make that should cost him his job. Reds fans can bash Bowden all they want but the Nationals did the right thing by keeping Soriano for several reasons. 1.) It sends a message to the fans that they want to build their franchise around Soriano, Vidro, and Zimmerman. 2.) Nats president Stan Kasten said it would have taken a huge deal to send Soriano out of town, and obviously that didn't happen. Even if Soriano bolts at the end of the season, the Nats still get compensation in the way of an additional first round draft pick and a sandwich pick. That's Three draft picks before the second round which would be comparable to anything they would have gotten in return in a trade. 3.) It also sends a message to the players that the new ownership is trying to build a winner. I'm sure the higher-ups were the ones calling the shots on trade day and not Bowden exclusively. 4.) Soriano has repeatedly said he wants to stay in Washington and likes the town and the team. He just doesn't like his position. I think the Nats will do everything in their power to re-sign him in the off-season and will likely trade Vidro for pitching help over the winter and move Soriano to second base. Once again, this is one of those non-deals that will likely pan out for the Nats in the next 2-3 years.

November 19, 200619 yr Care to revisit this one??? Sure. As a Cubs fan, Washington did the right thing by not trading him, making him available to the Cubs in the FA market. Great move by Bowden! I nominate him for GM of the year.
