2007 district for Russell

Featured Replies

I would like to see Russell and Lawrence County open their rivalry back up.

That would be another good one for both schools imo.

I agree in the renewal of the old Rams / Red Devils rivalry might be very profitable $$$$ wise. I know for a fact that B.T. Ross when he was at Raceland done everything in his power to play Russell, McGlone and the Russell A.D. would not play........Period. That may have been one factor that brought about the Rams/Tomcats series. Besides that game may come to be anyway bc I have been hearing rumors (right now that's all they are) of Raceland moving to AA in the near future.

Russell will be AAA under the new system.

Also as a player at Russell during the Bill Tom era at Raceland, we would have loved to play Raceland. Coach McGlones roots are in WV and he always liked to schedule some of the traditional powers from the Huntington area (Barboursville, Milton, HHS, to name a few).

A Raceland vs. Russell game on Friday would be great for both schools. This game used to be a huge rivalry and was a big gate for both schools. Any fan of high school football that would not want to see this game is in the wrong sport.Let's bring this rival back and start cutting the fire wood for the pep rally (Burn the Devil Night).:thumb: :

I sure remember those - a lot of members on here are probably too young remember the Rambler / Red Devil rivalry - it was as hot as any around. I even remember when I was real young - (elementary school), my sisters would take me to the Russell (burn the Devil night) pep rally - their friends and some of the football players at that time would pick me up and put me on their shoulders so I could see better. Bring it back! cville you know Raceland Football's motto : Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime - Rams back down from no one.

Oh, I don't know. Why does the Univ. of Texas schedule games with "N. Texas". A team that they beat 65-0 two years ago, and who were a total of 2-9 last year? Maybe, to help N. Texas' program? I think that a game with Raceland and/or Fairview could help THEIR program out. Plus it would be a definite 'big' gate for those 2 teams

Hey RD, just speaking as one Raceland Fan I don't think that Raceland "NEEDS" a Russell game to as you say "help their program out". I would like to see it to revive an old rivalry but that is all. I don't think that Raceland needs - no, I know they don't to have anyone in particular on the schedule to "help the program".:D . Raceland has always played the bigger schols in their out of district schedule. Imo for the size school that Raceland is they take a back seat to no one in athletics or academics. I am afraid that you are going to throw a shoulder out patting yourself on the back.:sssh::D:p Good luck to both teams this year.

Touche'. That one really hurt. Sorry about the inference. In the "help their program out" statement, I meant that it would help their program out by playing a team "2 classes" above them. It could help them in the playoffs when N.KY comes calling with a "CLASS A" team that looks like they could play a "3 A" schedule. Sorry again, my bad.

:thumb: No problem, I was thinking that you were meaning something else:confused: . Raceland has always played AAA schools on it's schedule so I didn't make the connection that you were meaning to get across. As for the NKY schools, people like Beechwood and NCC can play with anyone in any class imo. Theirs(NKY) imo is just a different brand/level of football than people in my part of the state may realize.

Hey guys - as for the word filter violation on my previous post, I must have had slip of the keyboard and someone caught it:sssh: . Sorry. I was saying " as for the NKY schools":thumb: I now have used "edit' and changed it if that was the problem. Thanks to whoever caught it.

And why should Russell be interested in 'helping out' those two programs????? Again I say that, from Russell's perspective, scheduling either of those programs right now would be a total waste of time. The Red Devils get enough opportunities to get the back ups some playing time once they hit the district portion of their season...no need to further water down the schedule, IMO.

Don't be so quick to judge!! The backups may not get a chance to see the field. Playing Raceland would only water down the Devils schedule if Russell came away with a loss and it could very well happen. Raceland has a proud tradition just as your program does and welcomes the chance to play all the top programs. I hope this game does happen again, it would be great for the fans and players as most of these guys are best friends.

Hey old rambler if the shoe was on the other foot u would be saying the same thing about Ironton.... I agree it is a waste of time to play raceland when they cannot compete with Russell... if Russell would have played Raceland in the last five years Raceland's chances would be over when they kicked the ball off... give me a break!!

There is no doubt Russell is the better team in the last few years and to guarantee a Russell win is within reason. But for you to say that Raceland could not compete is not a true statement at all. Did you say the same thing about Boyd Co. last season? No matter who the opponent the game is not over at the kickoff, that is why they play 4 quarters.

Raceland players & fans have shown Russell football nothing but respect the last few seasons and it should only be fitting for Raceland football that we get the same treatment.

I cetainly agree with you on the last few years 06, there is no doubt that Russell has had an outstanding program through the years, as a matter of fact I have complemented them on their tradition more than once. My problem with some, not all is that they seem to think that they are the only program around. I also believe that Raceland would had held an edge in the 80's in series over Russell. I am not trying to get in a Raceland/Russell fight at all. As for the Ironton post, for a team to blame the officials for a lost against a program like Ironton, Russell, Ashland or Racealnd just to name a few local teams is just crazy. I was not at that game long ago but did Russell play error free football - no mental mistakes, no missed blocks, no missed tackles and so on and so on. Usually a team can look back and see whre they cost themselves a game by their own mkstakes. Imo blaming the officials for a loss is just an easy way out and teaches kids the same thing rather than to look at their mistakes made and learn from them for the next game. Like I said - Good luck to Russell in the coming season. Also good luck to Ironton for that matter.(except in the Ashland game:D ).

:thumb: :thumb: I agee 100% cville. That may be why besides my alma mater I pull for the Tomcats of Ashland, their fans and coaches have always shown the Rams respect as we have their program and tradition.

You are correct in your statement about Tomcat football. Raceland has so much respect for the Tomcat tradition that it has tried to do some of the little things that Ashland does to become successful. Respect is something that is earned over a period of time and I think Ashland has earned their respect. They are a top notch program with great coaches and knowledgeable fans and a lot of programs would like to have what they have. Ashland has never refused to play Raceland when they had everything to lose by doing so and that in itself speaks great volumes for their program.Good luck to the Tomcats except on the season opener.

Yes, they would...sorry if you take it as arrogant, just being realistic. While Raceland does have a nice little tradition, but looking at JV results the last few years and knowing a bit about both programs it wouldn't be close.
