December 3, 201510 yr Can't post link from phone...KSR has the Story. Congratulations to former UK quarterback Derrick Ramsey, who was named Kentucky Secretary of Labor this afternoon by Governor Matt Bevin.... Since his playing days, Ramsey has held positions as athletic director for Kentucky State, Director of Development and Community Relations at UK, and most recently, athletics director at Coppin State. He's also dabbled in politics, serving as Kentucky's Deputy Secretary of Commerce in 2004.
December 3, 201510 yr Author Well, he played football at UK so at least he's qualified. Well that and serving as Deputy Secretary of Commerce.
December 3, 201510 yr Well that and serving as Deputy Secretary of Commerce. True -- so what about his service as Deputy Secretary of Commerce leads you to believe he's the most qualified to serve as Secretary of Labor?
December 3, 201510 yr Author True -- so what about his service as Deputy Secretary of Commerce leads you to believe he's the most qualified to serve as Secretary of Labor? What leads you to believe he's not. Yes I'm sure name recognition helped him, is there any reason you think he's not qualified. That type of job is about leading a department, not knowing labor law...it is about leadership. There are plenty of people there that know the daily ins and outs of the job.

That type of job is about leading a department, not knowing labor law...it is about leadership. There are plenty of people there that know the daily ins and outs of the job. I don't know if Ramsey is qualified or not, but I suspect his football career is the primary reason he was elected. You seem to think he's qualified. I honestly don't know. Tell me what he did as Deputy Secretary of Commerce that leads you to believe he's qualified (assuming you feel he's qualified for the position).
December 3, 201510 yr Author The point about being Deputy Secretary of Commerce is that he already has experience working in Frankfort at the highest levels. He's not just walking in off of the street so to speak. We have a current President that had a less impressive resume than does Ramsey.

December 3, 201510 yr From the Courier Journal: Derrick Ramsey will be Bevin labor secretary FRANKFORT, Ky. - Gov.-elect Matt Bevin announced Wednesday that Derrick Ramsey will be secretary of the Labor Cabinet in his administration. Ramsey, 58, is best known as a former star quarterback at the University of Kentucky who went on to a successful career in the National Football League. Since then he has had a career in sports administration and he worked in Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher's administration as a deputy secretary of the Commerce Cabinet. "I am excited to return to public service and help the Commonwealth of Kentucky become the greatest place to work and live," Ramsey said in a news release announcing his appointment. Bevin said in the news release that Ramsey's "will be a staunch advocate for Kentucky's workers and an integral member of our team." But state Rep. Larry Clark, a Louisville Democrat and retired electrician, said, "I'm sure Derrick Ramsey is a fine person but he has no labor heritage to my knowledge...He's been with the Commerce Cabinet, so he understands the management side. I hope he understands that on labor-management issues it takes two people at the table to make things happen." For the past seven years, Ramsey has been athletics director at Coppin State University in Baltimore, a post he resigned about two weeks ago. Ramsey has also been athletics director at Kentucky State University, in Frankfort, and director of development and community relations at the University of Kentucky. Ramsey holds a bachelor's degree in general studies from UK and a master's in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University. The news release announcing Ramsey's appointment did not say how much Ramsey will be paid. Bevin will be sworn in as governor on Tuesday.
December 3, 201510 yr Author So Ramsey's only qualifications are that he played football at Kentucky & he's already in politics? Anything else? No not his only qualification...but you evidently have some hang up about him. He has other work experience leading a couple of athletic departments. Again the job of Secretary is about leadership and being able to lead, he has demonstrated that he can do that.

Again the job of Secretary is about leadership and being able to lead, he has demonstrated that he can do that. To be clear, I have no beef with Ramsey. I know nothing about his political beliefs, and know just as much about his job duties as Secretary of Labor. I was just filling in for @Jim Schue and pointing out that an athletic career at UK (or any other school, for that matter) does not qualify somebody for political office.

Nor does two years as a junior Senator with a community organizing career history. Just sayin............

If that was all he had ever done I would agree...but as you may or may not have read in the story you posted, he has done more than play football.
December 3, 201510 yr My new boss. I sure am HOPING he's going to be good. Out of curiosity what was the resume of the previous secretary of labor?
