How do other schools do it?

Featured Replies

The thread that posed the question about Mayfield's long term success and perceived lack of D1 players ended up a good thread about how Mayfield maintains the level of excellence. I am interested in how other schools such as Highlands, Trinity, and others maintain their level. As someone mentioned in the thread that totaled regional finals, someone noted that the rich keep getting richer. How does this happen, what do the "rich" do that others don't?

They keep winning which brings good players into the program. Also, dedicated coaching staffs and off season conditioning are a big factor.

The rich get richer, no question, as success breeds success.

One factor is also the deep playoff runs allow for more practice, more reps, more games.

For instance, This is Belfry's 6th straight appearance in the finals. This year's seniors are the third consecutive class who have had 20 additional weeks of practices, and 20 additional games under their belt. The advantage of that cannot be overlooked.

A player on a team who never makes the playoffs gets to play in 40 games over their career. These kids have played in 60. These coaches have coached in 90 games in 6 years, in all sorts of situations, all kinds of environments, with a lot at stake. It makes them better coaches too.

When you have a record of success like Trinity, for example, kids want to play for the program. Winning is as good of an advertisement as any. When you add a great coaching staff and excellent facilities, you breed a successful program. I think if you look at the top programs in the state of Kentucky, you'll find that those three factors are at play.

Look at Trinity, St X , Male, Central, and Desales.

Then look at just about every other school in Jefferson Co.

I'm bringing this up because it will help with my point that some places are football schools and some are not.

Just because a team loses doesn't mean they don't work hard. I have seen coaches work their butts off, but not win a state title. Not everyone has bingo $$ going right in their program. Some coaches have to wear many hats. (I.e head coach, strength coach, equipment manager, offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinator). Just because they don't win a title doesn't mean they don't work harder the Trinity, St.X, Male, Desales,

These schools do a fantastic job. No doubt. I think they win because success breeds success. Someone brought up extra practices for 5 more weeks. It's true. That helps out big time. Sometimes the school and parents are involved in helping and letting coaches coach. I think that's what mayfield has. Do they have talent every year No. Do they instill a quality program from elementary school level? Yes. Do they fundraise well. Absolutely. It's a great program and a great place RICH in tradition. Mayfield is a Football school.

I think the youth program in Ft. Thomas is a big reason Highlnds can maintain success. The kids are fed Highlands' football at a young age, and no other program in NKY has had that.
