What can be done with Marshall County

Featured Replies

One of the biggest schools in the state/ good facilities/ fans that are BEGGING for success. It is possible to win there. Do they just need to come off some $$$? I have a great suggestion on who can start that change.

David Morris thoughts? suggestions?

And maybe he could pull Bob Counts out of retirement. He did start his coaching career there. :sssh:

Merrick has done a good job getting them headed in right direction. You are looking like a pot stirrer early.

I have always been dumbfounded that Marshall has not been a more consistent player on the western Kentucky football scene. Some schools are football schools, some schools are basketball schools. Marshall is a basketball school.

Not so sure about this.

Gotta give him at least 4 years. He has a lot of damage to try to repair. Isn't Morris already an assistant for Merrick?

Some schools are just mysteries.

Marshall County

Logan County

Breckenridge County

Hopkins Central

Those four schools combined record over the past ten years has got to be mind-boggling.

Marshall County is building a new middle school that will combine two middle schools. It will have all new facilities, including what looks like a new football field. This can be a huge change changer in Marshall county sports. They currently have three middle school teams and do not have a chance to play on the same team until they enter high school. With that said, it all depends on how the middle school coaches buy into coach Merrick's system.

Personally I see this as a huge improvements and a wonderful opportunity.

From my experience Merrick controls everything at the MS level so it may be a mute point.

It may just be me but IMO 3 middle schools is a better situation.

Why? 3 schools = 3 teams= 3x as many kids actually playing and getting developed.

But I would take 1 good feeder school over 3 bad ones.

Bowling Green struggled until Bowling Green Junior High was built. The football program took off after that. Biggest reason was that grades 1 through 8 were in the six elementary schools around town. There was no 7-8th grade football.

Look around at the consistently successful programs and you will find a single Junior High feeding the High School. Varsity eligibility is established in 9-12, not before. Another factor.

He is currently, but not so sure he will return. He is doing it for the love of the game, and is currently a principle in the Marshall school system. He is a proven head coach with a ton of experience.

- Talking about Morris.

Oh my, Marshall Co. has more problems than answers.

First and foremost, football is just "part-time entertainment" in the fall until basketball season starts. Just ask anyone there, it is a fact.

Marshall continues to hire from the "good old boy" pool time after time. The only decently successful coach they have had was Mike Lawson in the mid 2000s.

Since then they have hired Scott Shelton, who failed miserably. When Shelton resigned Marshall had several applicants, but got a guy who was big talk, but ended up more of a big failure, not to mention a child sex-offender. So on to their next coach, Merrick, a "convenient" assistant who had been on the staff thru 2 other unsuccessful coaching tenures. He has racked up a stellar 4 wins and 17 losses.

Marshall may never be a state contender, but it is a shame that a school that big cannot even field a team capable of a 50/50 record. There are athletes available, as Marshall routinely puts kids in the next level in basketball and baseball. But until Marshall gets serious about hiring qualified, proven candidates for its' coaching position, they will continue to get more of the same.

Didnt they go outside the box in the mid 2000's and bring an open style offense in? Wasnt that coach from Oboro Cath?
