Mayfield is appearing in their 7th straight State Championship game next Sunday. The first 6 were in class 1A and then they moved up to class 2A and here they are again.

 

Joe Morris and his staff deserve a ton of credit for keeping that program at this level over that length of time. I respect the heck out of that program and I want to offer my congratulations to them for setting the bar high.

 

 

Which brings up the question, "Is this the record in KY HS history?"

 

Did Beechwood maybe beat that in the 90's during their run under Yeagle. Or Highlands, or Trinity at some point?

Maybe @gchs_uk9 knows the answer to this one or can post a list.

Beechwood went seven straight times from 1991-97, winning six, and lost only to Mayfield in 1995.

Highlands had went eight straight times, winning seven, prior to yesterday's loss.

Trinity went eight straight times between 2005-12.

Good stuff.

 

8 straight is an amazing number, especially for Highlands who was playing up in class in some of those years.

Mayfield is a young team this year and return a good nucleus next year, so, they should have a great chance to be back again next year.. Arnett-QB, Bright-RB, a couple of OL and WRs and then a couple of LBs and DBs and a DL,,

The Cards will lose their top 4 recievers, the kicker, a LB, and couple of linemen. The line should be stronger next year and the receiving core should not miss a beat as it is very deep. The kicker is a huge loss. I expect the Cards to be stronger next year but I am much more worried about this year at the moment. Thanks to my ole Belfry pal Watusi who I have enjoyed seeing at the state games over the years for giving my team these props

This is an amazing run that our program is on right now. It seems like most of these years I have watched these teams early on and said "no way we are a contender this year". They somehow seem to prove me wrong every time. It has been a blast watching and cheering on these teams, and I am very proud to be a Mayfield Cardinal.

People think it is easy to coach one of these powerhouse schools and all you have to do is give 'em a helmet and line 'em up.

 

Truth is it is really tough to maintain that high level of play. These programs have the same turnover of players, cycles of high and low talent and other issues that every other program has. They also have unbelievable expectations from parents and fans, and pressure from the administration to keep it up. It is not an easy thing to do, yet here you have several programs who just get it done year in and year out.

 

Mayfield is a good at it as anyone, and pound for pound their run is as impressive as any.
