1919 Kentucky Basketball

Featured Replies

I bought a couple of odd boxes lot of books at auction on Sunday, including 1980, 81 and 82 UK yearbooks. The coolest thing there was a 1919 UK yearbook. Here is the 1919 hoops schedule and results.

UK 46 Wesleyan 5

Georgetown 21 UK 30

Centre 38 UK 30

Cincinnati 28 UK 18

UK 28 Chattanooga 25

Cumberland 21 UK 7

Tennessee 40 UK 26

Vanderbilt 36 UK 26

Georgetown 22 UK 18

UK 34 Cincinnati 21

UK 18 Wesleyan 13

Centre 21 UK 10

UK 30 Tennessee 14

Miami 38 UK 14

That's pretty cool, Pappy. :thumb:

Split with UC that year. I hope they fired the coach.

I may have to lend this old annual to Randy Parker, it might be useful in a write-up or two.

Here's the intro recapping the 1919 season:

"Wildcat basketball results for 1919 would go down on graph paper with the stagger of a stew. The team was erratic in its victory and defeat as last April was in its days of sunshine and storm. Neither could be predicted with any regularity. In short, it was no proposition to gamble over."

Some of the season recap:

"Dishman's importance on the basketball quintet was like the importance of a trunk to a tree. His natural and developed physical qualities fitted him well, for when he smashed into a play there was seldom anything left but dust."

Randy, eat your heart out.

PS - three of the players were from Maysville; described in the yearbook as "a little river town across from Aberdeen, O."

Centre was undefeated that year and in the UK archives Centre is declared the state champions that year.

"Dishman's importance on the basketball quintet was like the importance of a trunk to a tree. His natural and developed physical qualities fitted him well, for when he smashed into a play there was seldom anything left but dust."

Side note/question: Did you go to any of these games?

I was the sports editor. Still haven't lost quite all of that flowery prose.
