The best HS football week of the year

Featured Replies

The meat of the playoffs is here. Lots of great match-ups, many of which we would never see in the regular season. Win or go home pressure. Magnificent time. For all the first round haters here is the real deal playoffs.

Yep this week is as much fun as any week of the year. As you said you get some cross region games that you normally can only see in the playoffs.

I have to agree! Week 2 and 3 of the playoffs is pretty awesome! There are tons of games going on.

Weeks 4 and 5 are fun, but there are much fewer games happening.

This is when I wish there were Friday and Saturday games being played, there are matchups Friday night that I would gladly drive 4 hours to go see if they were played Saturday.

This is the week when everyone is looking for updates on other games.

Great time of the year!

This is the week the seniors realize this could be it. Last week is a give me for a lot of teams. Round two you get some high stake games. Two time defending champions Desales is traveling way down south to Monroe in hopes of getting back to Cal next week. A lot on the line for them. This is a dangerous game for them because Monroe has nothing to lose or prove. Only the locals think they have a chance. I am sure there are these kind of games all over the state!!!!! Safe travels to all that are headed out of region with there teams.....

I remember in high school as we got deeper into the playoffs my coach would state "96 teams in state still playing football this week. Will you be one of the one of the 48 next week?" and so on. It got pretty intense as the numbers got smaller, knowing you were one of the last ones, all eyes on you, waiting to see if yours is the team to fall this week or to make another jump closer to eternal glory.

I think the best thing to do as a coach is make the kids feel like this just another game as usual. The challenge is taking the additional emotion out of it. I guess it comes down how your kids are playing "as usual". If you need a miracle maybe you can squeeze some extra juice from the drama of the playoffs like that.

At the same time its good to say that stuff. Help the kids really cherish the moments.

I agree with cherish the moment. You will never get it back and some if theses boys do not realize it's almost over forever!
