2C,

For at least 1A and 6A (assuming they are 16 team classes only) I am all for no districts and all teams make the playoffs.

Obviously. But I really doubt you will see a 16 team class let alone two, even though it makes perfect sense and best deals with the enrollment discrepancies.

Next, I would like to see 2A through 5A cut one week from the playoffs but if not I would be OK with 1A and 6A playing 11 games.

Ideally, yes, but I think the latter has much better odds of happening.

The new format can work well if the powers that be want it to work well.

"Work well for whom?" is the question that keeps coming to mind. ;)

I realize what I proposed here doesn't address home field advantage, which in my mind is the ONLY benefit of playing the district games during the regular season. If you are going to be playing your district foes the first two playoff rounds, what else benefit is the regular season matchups save for home field.

If that issue could be solved, I think dumping the regular season district competitions would serve everyone well. Some teams are in 8 team districts (Russell). There are more than a couple of their district games that serves little more than a practice session, it doesn't benefit either team.

The only way to facilitate doing away with the regular season district games is to allow everyone into the playoffs. And if we are already going to have 75-90% of the teams in the playoffs under the new system, why not go ahead and make this move?

Of course it will never happen, but nonetheless it's worth talking about because (at least to me :D) it makes good sense.

And for the record I would never support a points based system for picking playoff teams like the Harbin system.

I posted the below in one of the other forums, someone please tell me, why do you think that if they re classisfy to make 5 or 6 classes that their will be less teams making the playoffs? This whole idea is so that MORE teams can be in the playoffs and have a "better" opportunity to get a state title. Less games is not going to be their answer.

I think they want in, and if you let them play up, it opens pandoras box. Teams will be lobbying to play up or down and other teams will be lobbying to disallow it. It'll be a mess. I say if you do a super class, and I am not opposed to it, it will be very tricky. The best idea I've heard would be to make it the ONLY class that teams can play up in, and once go up, you can't go back down for an extended period. Say two cycles of the normal reclassification for size or more. I hate four teams per district, but there again, the reclassification is about "opportunity". If almost all schools get to the playoffs then there is more "opportunity" for schools to be proud of something. I have no problem with the two per district

idea, matter of fact, it made alot of teams seasons just to be able to say "we made the playoffs". But those days are gone my friends, there is no way that 3/4th's of the schools are going to say we don't care about making the playoffs. There are 217 football teams. Presently, we have 8 districts, and 4 reps per district, thats 36 teams per class. 32 X 4 = 128 teams. I think it's safe to say that most people voting want more than 128 teams in.

With 5 even districts, we have 160 teams in the playoffs.

With 6 even districts, we have 192 teams in the playoffs.

5 and a super class, 176 out of 217.

4 and a super class, 144 out of 217.

I don't see them going to all this trouble for 4 normal and one super. It does not make sense with the philosophy being used to get us there. So here are your choices, you tell me.

Presently we have 128 teams making the playoffs.

With 4 and a super class, 144

With 5 even districts, 160 out of 217.

With 5 and a super class, 176 out of 217.

Sandman and others,

I just ran into something that has me stumped & maybe someone can tell me if/where Im wrong. ?????????????

Going to the more classes with fewer teams per, that seems to have us coming up with anywhere from 43/44 to 50/51 teams per class.

It seems to me that you will have to completely restructure the platoffs to include a bye for quite a few teams NO MATTER whether it's top 2 teams, 4 teams, or all teams that are included. Let me explain...

Because when you create a playoff bracket you go with teams in multiples of 2, then 4, then 8, then 16, then 32, and so forth. So.... with more than 32 but less than 64 teams in each class it seems to me that we would have to come up with some sort of criteria to include a bye round for some teams.

Am I completely missing this, or is this another factor that coaches & everyone would have to decide if they want - some teams having a bye?

Thanx,

Woody Jr

Currently we have 32 per class making the playoffs. If we keep the same playoff system (4 per district) there will be no need for a bye week.

Added note:

If you start with the idea of a new classification playoff bracket and have 32 teams playing - thats 16 games being played in the opening round.

You would need 16 opponents to face those winners - that would mean 16 teams that have received an opening round bye.

Using that formula you are then working with 48 teams.

It would probably have to be 16 districts with 3 teams in each district and the top team gets the bye [the rotations/matchups would have to be worked out] So in this model if you have 50/51 teams there would be 2 or 3 districts in each class with 4 teams in it and they would not make the playoffs.

If all of this is completely wrong from the get-go a mod can just erase it:sssh:

Cheers, Woody Jr

Yes I know, thats what got me thinking about this.

If they shrink the number of teams in each class you cannot have 4 teams in each district - am I looking at that right?

Your mention of 16 districts is interesting in that I have mentioned before that I would like to see 16 districts with 2 from each district making the playoffs (instead of 8 and 4). Same number of playoff teams we have now, just shorter district schedules, and more freedom on regular season scheduling.

The feedback on that is that it wouldn't be desireable because it takes us back to the days when your post season rested on only 1 game during the season the way it was up until the mid 80's.

Even at 43/44 per class, you would have an average 5/6 per district, so there would be no problem allowing 4 per district like we do now. There would be a few districts where everyone makes it because we would see some 4 team districts.

yeah I had brought up having only the top 2 make it in these new classifications and others had pointed out thatthe only reason they were making the change was so more teams would get into the playoffs basically. I don't know cause Im not privy to that info but mathematically I just dont see how you can have everyone in the playoff simply due to the factoring equation of 2,4, 8, 16, 32, 64. You can go 32 plus 16(with byes) but thats about it unless you have at least 64 teams in your class - which we will not with any increase in classes it seems?

How many districts are you figuring on with that?

Doesnt it need to be either 8 districts or 16 districts or 32 districts - just so it will match a playoff bracket?

still curious...

OK - I see your working with the 8 districts times 4or 5 like we have now.

As I was saying, others talked like they wanted more teams playing so I was looking how they would do so

I see what you are saying now. IF you wanted to include everyone, it would create a problem, mathematically because of the odd number in each class. I agree. I guess you'd have to have more 1st round byes than what you are thinking.

For instance, if you have 44 in your class, you could have 12 first round games and 20 byes. Now, how you'd determine who gets the 20 byes, that is up to somebody else to figure out. LOL.

44 teams

8 districts

5.5 per district.

44 teams

Lets just flip a coin for the trophy ;)

Im getting a headache

Everbody is in. That's the district schedule. It's a joke to go through the district again in the 1st two rounds of the playoffs. Is Elmer Fudd running the show at the KHSAA now?:D

My head hurts thinking of changing the number of districts too.:creepy: I think I'll expand upon the current system and then we can work from there. I am going to assume that there will be 4, 4 team districts for the super class.

Presently we have 128 teams making the playoffs. 8 districts per class, and 4 classes, 54 teams per class. 6.75 teams per district. 4 playoff spots. 2.75 teams don't make it per district.

5A Super 16 - With 4 and a super class, 144 teams make the playoffs. 4 classes 1A thru 4A will have 8 districts, 52.75 teams per class, 6.59 teams per district. 5A has 16 teams, 4 districts, 4 teams per district all make the playoffs. At least one Bye week and two less post season games. 2.59 teams per district don't make the playoffs.

5A - With 5 even districts, 160 out of 217. 8 districts, 43.4 teams per class. 5.425 teams per district. 1.425 teams per district don't make playoffs.

6A Super 16 - With 5 even districts and a super class, 176 out of 217. 8 districts, 40.2 teams per class. 5.025 teams per district. 1.025 teams per district don't make the playoffs. 6A has 16 teams, 4 districts, 4 teams per district all make the playoffs. At least one Bye week and two less post season games.

With 6 even districts, 192 out of 217. 8 districts per class, 36.166 per class, 4.52 teams per district, .52 teams per district don't make the playoffs.

So to recap the number of teams per district and class that won't make the playoffs under the current proposals, which I think is one of the major underlying things that any reconstruction will have to include the numbers are thus.

All proposed districts and classes have 4 teams representing them in the playoffs. Same as now.

4A even districts - 2.75 teams don't make it per district, 22 teams per class.

5A Super 16 - 2.59 teams per district (classes 1-4A) don't make the playoffs, 20.72 teams per class .

5A even districts - 1.425 teams per district don't make playoffs, 11.4 teams per class .

6A Super 16 - 1.025 teams per district (classes 1-5A) don't make the playoffs,8.2 teams per class .

6A even districts, .52 teams per district don't make the playoffs, 4.16 teams per class.
