Since playoff baseball starts tomorrow and since today is the anniversary of the famous (infamous if you're a Braves fan) infield fly call I figured I'd post it to get the playoff juices going.

 

 

Like the rule or hate the rule all you want but this was a perfect call by the rulebook.

This play from 2 years ago in the World Series is another post-season call that hacked off some folks.

Both were weird circumstance but both technically called correctly.

Oh I don't disagree and understand the rule. Just thought it was a huge break for my Cards at the time and thinking back to how huge it was to win that game down there.

I was really upset with that call when it happened but after watching the replay a few times I understood it. The Series turned out okay for me so I'd honestly forgotten about it.

By the rules, I understand. It doesn't make it any less irritating that an infield some 60 feet into the outfield would get the infield fly rule, but especially that he made the call about 1 second before it hit the ground. At the end of the day, bases loaded with 1 out is better than men on first and second with two outs, but they were still down 3 runs in the 8th inning. We'll never remotely know whether they'd have pushed any runs across from that situation.

Oh I get that his depth caused a lot of angst. One could argue that letting it drop would not penalize the offensive team as the likelihood of completing a double play is very low. However, the wording is the wording and I can't thank of additional wording that would make it better.

The obstruction was spot on. The Infield was as borderline as they come and it would not have surprised me had it been called or not called. What irritates me 1000x more are inept umpires like Phil Cuzzi, CB Bucknor, Marty Foster, Angel Hernandez, and a few others. They can't get a simple a fair/foul right and are known to call a strike that almost bounces. And one of them will probably end up in the World Series. Pathetic.
