Who will be in Highlands' district in 2006?

Featured Replies

Of course CovCath and Highlands will be in it, and I assume that South Oldham and Grant County will as well. What's going on with Pendleton County, and I've heard that Holmes will be moving down from 4A to 3A, and will be in Highlands' district this upcoming season. What's the district going to be?

It will be the same this year w/ the addition of Pendelton CO (i think). In 2007 Holmes will move back to 3A and they are adding another class so Highlands may get bumped up to 4a because with the way they're redistricting, they are only counting the number of BOYS in grades 9-12. I could be wrong though. But i know for sure holmes will be back to 3a in 2007.

Nobody would be switching CLASSES for the '06 season. Would take an entire realignment for that to happen.

The same would be the case for a team that's not playing for district (like Pendleton). Otherwise, all the other teams in the district would have to drop a team they have an existing contract with to fit Pendleton in.

For '06 there will be no change to that district (nor any other I would imagine).

'07...now THAT is a whole different story. That district could look VERY different if we go to 6 classes.

My educated guess (looking at the 2-year old enrollments used for the LAST realignment and assuming there would be strictly an "even split" of all schools into six, 36-team classes) for these teams would put HIGHLANDS in 4A (possibly in a district with Bourbon, Franklin, Western Hills, and Harrison Co. -- and in a region with possibly LexCath AND Boyle).

Pendleton I'm guessing could have to go EAST in 4A to play against Mason Co., Rowan Co., Lawrence Co., and Greenup Co.

The rest of those...

South Oldham -- unless enrollment changes dramatically (a possibility in that area) -- goes 4A like Highlands but would likely be grouped with the 3 or 4 other Louisville area schools in a district.

I show Holmes and Grant Co. in 5A.

CovCath would likely be in 5A...unless the KHSAA decides to go with some kind of "multiplier" formula for private schools -- then I'd guess they'd jump to 6A.

Not that they think this way at Highlands, but to be in FIVE-A (especially if CovCath were to be bumped up with a multiplier) would actually be a little less competitive than FOUR-A (where they'd probably be in a region with Boyle and LexCath).

CoachJ- what would be the basis for a multiplier(other than 2 since they're single sex)??

I always had the impression that Highlands was on the smaller end of the class - # wise. Is that wrong or has it changed?

I'd guess they're in the bottom 10 in 3A enrollment.

Just something I've heard bandied around as a potential "fix" for those with a bent against the Private schools.

It's also something that several surrounding states (Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana both did so just this year I believe) have gone to as a measure to appease the "anti-private" people in their states without creating a totally separate class.

I have NOT heard that the KHSAA is seriously considering it...however, I heard there will be a completely new KHSAA Board of Control taking over in June (and BEFORE the re-alignment in July).

That body MAY look to trends in how other states deal with the issue to help guide their hand.

Again, this is NOT something that I specifically endorse...I'm just stating that IF it were to happen, it would affect the alignment projections I gave in this thread.

4th-smallest 3A school in CURRENT alignment (thus, why they would be FOUR-A in a six-class realignment while all others in their current 3A district would become FIVE-A).

Again, not sure how PRESENT enrollment numbers are different than last ones OR whether the realignment will be to 5 classes or 6 classes or include a "Super-Class" at the top-end.

A multiplier for same sex schools is a straight forward, common sense idea for most people IMO.

Thats what I was getting at.

Im not an expert on NKY so I didnt want to shout down another but it jjust didnt make sense to me?

A multiplier of TWO already occurs for SAME-SEX schools like St. X or Trinity. That's not the same issue as what's happening in some other states to appease their "anti-private" movements.

What I was talking about was the possibility of a multiplier for ALL PRIVATE schools -- just by virtue of the fact that they're private. Usually it's something between 1.25 and 1.5.

This kind of thing would obviously ONLY affect things at classes BELOW the top class (the ONLY one in my opinion that is dominated by private schools).

Good to see we're in agreement that the multiplier would not fix "the problem".

PENDLETON CO. is NOT coming back into the district even though it is not listed like that on the KHSAA website. They are rumored to sit out the next 2 year cycle also. Although I don't know this for fact. I wish they would have joined because I would make scheduling much easier for teams in the district.
