I have witnessed very poor calls from players and parents this year. In a tight match, this can swing the momentum very quickly. In a questionable situation, the official should at least call a replay. The best situation would be to have paid line judges that have no affiliation to either school. While this does cost more money, it would be fair for all teams involved.

It's always a money issue with officials.

 

For the longest time 9th region basketball held off on making games 3-man crews. State mandated it so now you see three. Go to a basketball game in Indy and you'll see 3-man crews for all JV games. Baseball is the same way. All frosh games have one umpire and 95% of JV games have one umpire. That's a lot to cover for one umpire. I worked a game in the frosh tourney and the Grant County coach asked where my partner was. Told him we didn't have partners in the 9th. He was shocked.

 

It's always money.

I was a sideline judge when my daughter played for NDA against Mercy at a tourney in Louisville. I was so nervous not to mess up and get it right. I would prefer to be nervous sitting in the stands as a spectator.

 

I will say that I have seem some of the bigger schools (SHA, Assumption, etc) employ official line judges for games vs each other.

 

Been spending most of my volleyball time at the grade school level this season, but saw this thread and got my attention.

 

Mercy, SHA, and Assumption do employ official line judges for their matches against each other, and it was because of the heated rivalry.

Specifically, 2 years ago at Assumption, some very blatantly bad line calls were made by an Assumption player/judge that did effect the outcome of the match. Were they not paying attention? No. Chatting with the crowd? No. Wanting to give it to the rival? Seemed like it.

 

Afterwards, it was said that Mercy's Garvey said he would only play with officials from that point forward. Apparently Kordes agreed as that is what has happened. SHA also went along.

 

Neither players nor parents should judge matches--too hard to be objective for most. This is something that has burned me for awhile from school to club, which is even worse. Granted, their are conscientious players and parents who do call a good game or at least try too.

 

It will, in the end, come down to money. Do you want to spend the $$ for quality, or continue with mediocrity.

Why would you put kids, parents in this situation, its only going to create problems.

Bull, volleyball officials make more than any other sport, your saying they cant split funds between three officials.

I think all players need to be able to effectively and correctly line judge. There is no reason for them not to. If they aren't paying attention, reprimand them and correct it for the next time. It's up to the coaches to make sure their line judges do their job.

The girl you thought looked like she was in 6th grade is a sophomore. To answer the original question, it depends on the athlete as it depends on the parent. I've witnessed some very overzealous parents who are not always so impartial. It really depends on the individual as to what kind of job they will do. I don't think you can generalize it by asking should it be an athlete or parent.

Misspelling

I think each school should supply non players to line judge each hone game. Either parents, school personnel, or other athletes or interested students that get proper training maybe in exchange for admission to the matches.

 

Each paticipating school has a rep from thier school line judge and whem the teams switch sides between sets so do the line judges. I dont think a kid or parent should line judge and lets face it the KHSAA isnt going to mandate it the there be 4 officials at a regular season game. At least not anytime soon. The latter would be the best situation IMHO

16th region schools home team supply both line judges for regular season matches. At least 1 district has agreed to pay KHSAA officials to line judge during their seed matches.
