What defines a Bigot? WHO gets to define what is a Bigot?

Featured Replies

I have seen the word "Bigot" thrown around in this forum quite carelessly. Disagree with someone's "lifestyle", you are labeled a Bigot. What defines a Bigot? AND.....who gets to define what a Bigot is? I am expecting serious discussion, this is not a "trick" question or a game of "gotcha".

I googled "definition: bigot" and got this return: a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions

Like a of terms meant to be derogatory this term gets used way too often which causes it to lose its effect. "Lib" would be an example.

Thank you, but I appreciate it. But, that's a pretty broad definition. According to that definition, MANY of the posters on this forum could be defined as a Bigot. I disagree with many opinions, but does that mean I am "intolerant"?

Difference in disagreeing with opinions and being intolerant. I disagree with quite a few opinions but I can see where those people are coming from and why their opinion is the way it is, which makes me tolerant. If I am closed minded and refuse to even accept that someone may have another opinion, I'm intolerant.

We all are bigots to some degree. Everyone has prejudices.

Prejudice is not the same thing as Bigotry. Just because I pre-judge someone to be an idiot, that doesn't make me a Bigot.

So, if I refuse to accept your opinion, I am a Bigot? I know that many folks feel that way, but that is ridiculous.

Prejudices, however, often lead to bigotry.

I want to thank everyone that is participating. Keep it going, we might learn something.

No. If you refuse to accept that I may have a different opinion, by definition then you are a bigot. Merely not accepting my opinion does not make you a bigot.

They can, but I refuse to accept the premise that everyone is

a Bigot to some degree or another. Prejudices are not always a bad thing. I pre-judge many people and many things, but I also do it with an open mind.

I think it's meaning is pretty clear: a bigot is a person who disdains a particular class of people (race, religion, gender, nationality, etc.).

But, it's one of those terms people consider so beyond the pale to use it's to the point that even if someone is a bigot they can claim righteous indignation when it's pointed out.

"Muslims are dangerous!"

"Isn't that kind of bigoted?"

"HOW DARE YOU?!"

"OK."

By definition? Says who? That definition alone is Bigotry.

You gave a pretty good definition. But, many folks are labled Bigots for much less, like by simply refusing to accept someones opinion.
