Possible New Whitley County Coach

Featured Replies

Sources close to the situation report Williamsburg Coach Jim Black will be returning back to Whitley County to be the head coach of the Colonels next season. Good luck Coach Black and thanks for all you did in Jacket Land if this is indeed true. :thumb:

Coach Black has had some great games at Williamsburg. Beating Corbin for the first time since 1964, winning the district, and almost taking the region at Pikeville. He would be a good fit for Whitley County. It seems that if you look back, Whitley started to falter a bit when he left and went to Williamsburg.

I am sure if he does entertain an offer from Whitley County, Williamsburg will surely make a counter offer, I would if I were in charge there.

Should Jim Black take the job at Whitley, who would fill the vacancy left behind by him?

Woods

Conn

Herren

Lawson

Teague

Campbell

Adams

Good question. Might see Mike Campbell make a return to the sidelines. His district would certainly be more attainable at Wburg. He is a disciple of Bob Rose. With an Adminstrative position looming in the Alternative Center it might just happen. Talk about a strange turn of events.

If Jim Black were to leave, I would pray administration at the burg would, for continuity's sake look at Herron or Woods. A new offense was installed in the spring and lets face it, Williamsburg does not have the numbers to play a power running game, but can compete well in their district with the passing game, as has been proven in the past. Maybe its false hope on my part but, if I was Williamsburg I would find a way to keep Black.

I think that Jim Black would stay. According to another site, he would have to be offered something called "Deaton Money", I presume that is a lot! At any rate, from what I know of the man, which is to say not much, he is very smart and from what I understand was not treated to kindly at the last interview, again, this is reading from threads, so do not take my word on it! I would think that he would not go there because of his character! Again, I say this with a grain of salt, just simply because I do not know enough of him or his situation

Jim Black should be announced as the new Colonel Leader on Tuesday at noon.

After all the leaks that occured with Gentry's hiring and subsequent leaving, one would think that Lonnie would be playing his cards closer to the vest than having info like this floating around again. How ceratin is this information? And if true who will be Williamsburg's new coach?

Williamsburg's softball season will more than likely end Monday night when they play South Laurel in the district and Black is the softball coach, so this timing sure makes sense.

Maybe it is not rumor this time around. I think the AD position not becoming open at WCHS made the decision a little bit easier for Mr.Gentry to gallop off to Georgia. Only in house name the Jackets will consider is Woods. I am not so sure he would be interested. They other assistants would all be interested, I am sure. Should be an interesting job for some Coach. Good luck Jackets.

If Jim goes to Whitley, they are indeed fortunate to get him. The man has my undying respect. He may not have been the first choice, but he is the right choice. Too bad folks had blinders on when he interviewed previously and were deceived by the great lie. As far as the Jackets are concerned, although Woods would be a good choice, I'm not sure he could or would take it. For the little its worth, I would love to see the job offered to Jerry Herron. He is bright, energetic, the kids love and respect him, and continuity would occur (which if Black does leave would be imperative). I hope administration at Williamsburg would see this and make a good, no even more, the right choice!

To coach Black, if you go, God speed, best of luck, and thanks for the great memories. You sir are a gentleman, a great leader and molder of young men, and although sad to see you go, happy for you and your family and only the best to you.

Does anyone have any idea what type of offense Whitley will run next year if Black is indeed the coach? Who will be the QB candidates now?

I would guess that McCumbers will be back in the mix. Bowman will be a senior. Teague was getting the nod running the option. This makes for an interesting scenario indeed. If Black were to be hired as the head coach, I could see McCumbers getting the nod with Teague as a WR. But who knows at this point. I still haven't seen for certain that Gentry is gone.
