Frankie Smith New Christian Co. Colonel HC

Recommended Posts

Here is the information I have on Head Coach Frankie Smith. The man has an impressive resume to say the least.

Head Coach Frankie Smith will be going into his 15th year as a high school head coach (29th overall at various levels) and holds a career record of 248-132 [125-35 at Tug Valley (1994-99: 1999 Class AA WV State Champion), 60-73 at Saginaw Valley State, MI (2008-2012), 63-24 at Sheldon Clark (2013-2015: 2013 15th Region Runner-Up to Johnson Central - 2015 57th District Champion)].

Coach Smith was also an Assistant Coach at Miami of Ohio. Great hire by CC as I wish Coach Smith the best of luck in the upcoming season! The man can flat out coach!

Was arguably the best coach in the 15th region. A very good hire for Christian Co.

On a side note what a tough month for Sheldon Clark. Lost the best player in the 15th region (Dylan James) to Mercer Co and then your coach to Christian Co right as school starts.

Talk about a gut shot. Will be tough to replace this late in the game.

I'll take Bill Mike Runyon.

Most accomplished Coach in the 15th Region - Bill Mike Runyon (without question) Best Coach in the 15th Region - Tommy McKenzie

There are some very good coaches in the 15th Region, but since he burst on the scene, only one coach has a winning record against Tommy McKenzie and that coach was Frankie Smith (Coach Smith is 6-5 against Coach McKenzie - winning record refers to Coaches in the 15th Region).

Tommy McKenzie took over JC in 2008 (8 full years as HC). In that time he has advanced to 5 regional title games (4-1 in those games), has 1 elite 8 appearance, won 20 games 6 times (currently 5 times in a row - averages over 20 wins a season), been selected 15th Region COY, and has been named the KY/OH All Star game HC. He has a winning record against every coach in the 15th Region during his tenur to include Bill Mike Runyon who beat him 4 times in 2008 (Coach McKenzie is 6-1 against him since Coach Runyon came out of retirement). Coach McKenzie is 121-39 (.7563) against 15th Region opponents since he became Head Coach in 2008.

IMO the two best coaches in the 15th Region were Tommy McKenzie and Frankie Smith. Since Coach Smith has departed for CC, this leaves coach McKenzie at the top of the hill. There are great coaches in the 15th and I am not trying to take anything away from them, just my opinion from the data in that time frame (2008 to present).

Bill Mike Runyon 573-294 (28 Years - .6541 Win %)

Tommy McKenzie 162-87 (8 Years - .6560 Win %)

Since 2008 (Tommy McKenzie's first year):

Bill Mike Runyon 72-38 (.6545 Win %)

Tommy McKenzie 162-87 (.6560 Win %)

Since Bill Mike Runyon returned from retirment in the 2012-2013 season:

Bill Mike Runyon 42-34 (.5526 Win%)

Tommy McKenzie 71-28 (.7171 Win %)

Most accomplished is Bill Mike Runyon (who is a great coach without question). Current best coach in the 15th is Tommy McKenzie. Its unfair to compare them in era's when Coach McKenzie didnt coach. That will be like saying Russell Williamson is the best coach in the 15th Region (2 state titles with Inez) or like saying Jason Booher is the best coach in the 15th (Current Pikeville AD). Bill Mike Runyon may be the best coach of all-time in the 15th but the point I am trying to make is that of the current best coach in the 15th (which is Tommy McKenzie - again my opinion but he has won 4 straight 15th Region Crowns and been in the title game 5 of 8 years).

I should also point out that the aforementioned records for Coach McKenzie were against the toughest 15th Region schedule (across the 8 year period) when compared to any other 15th Region School.

Fun to debate though, there are lots of great coaches in the 15th with many chapters of their careers yet to be written.

I agree the 15th region has been weak compared to the past, and your right probably bottom 3 or 4. Coach Runyon has also never won a regional title without an athlete that played at UK on the roster and garnering major minutes. There is something to be said about a coach developing talent but that's a different topic for a different time so you have to give him some credit there (it is difficult to coach great talent). I respect your opinion on coaches and will politely disagree. I think we can agree they are both pretty darn good at what they do. Honestly can't go wrong with either one at present.

The 15th did lose a good one in coach smith though. I wish him the best of luck in CC. I'm sure he will do a great job!
