Which Raceland teams were "almost" dominating and lost in the first round of the districts?:confused: Most Ram teams go further than expected and I think Vanderhoof has 1 regional title and 2 other appearances in the finals during his tenure.I would guess that Raceland has as many regional appearances as Russell, Greenup, or Fairview during the Vanderhoof years.:sssh:

I was speaking more of the pre Vanderhoof years, the one that stands out in my mind is in 74. IMO the Ramblers (as we were then) had one of if not the best team in the region, something like 24 and 2, had beaten Russell twice (Ithink) and also had beaten Paintsville who had the Lemaster boys (Johnny who played for the S.F. giants ) plus a couple of other ones that I believe played some pro ball. Got beat in the first round of the district vs. Russell.

I did some checking back after your post on this firebird, Lemaster did grduate in 73', the one I was thinking of that was their big gun that year I believe was Tommy Deskins. I believe that practically their whole team played leigion ball at Morehead for Don Hardin. I also think that I remember that a large number of them were drafted to MLB or signed through camps.Gary Cisco and Billy Bruce Foutch (U.K.) were also members of that elite team. Cisco as I remember was one of if not the best catcher that I had ever seen at that level. Paintsville had one heck of a team during this time span.

Looks like that they have, I was just informed via pm from someone that would know that I was right about the Raceland youth state title teams. One of them had a girl on it that is now a 6yr. starter for the Lady Rams softball team. Was also informed that they (Raceland youth) had beaten BC on it's way to the title. I remember watching the kids in some of those years, both Raceland and BC were VERY good. I am just hoping with still cautious optimism though, I know that I have seen a few years in the past that Raceland had a very good team, almost dominating the regular season only to lose in the first game of the district. Baseball imo is a sport more than any other where you just never know, walks, a few errors here and there and you are beat.

For the first title then came back next year and won it again in 2000 with a team that looked exactly like this. Moore,Gatrell,Keyser as pitchers. Austin Hunter,Kyle Potter,Tyler Whitt (outfield) Keyser 1stbase, Zane Hall 2ndbase Gatrell ss, Austin Blair 3rd (russell) Casey Branham, catcher.The 99 team played in Atlanta the 2000 team played in Franklin, Tenn. Dont know for sure if 99 team went undefeated in state tourny. think they did, but do know the 2000 team did. Know they defeated raceland once in tourny. not sure if they played twice. I think if your friend checks maybe they are refering to summer of 01.

Raceland won it in 1998 as 10 year olds, then some were on the the team that won it in 2001 as 12's. The 2001 group won some games in the regional in Georgia. Raceland had no girls on either team. I know the years are right because I coached the first team.

She was in 4th grade along with Grizzle, Morris, Mullins, Walker. And I have pictures to prove it. This was in July of 1999. Incognito, I bet we that don't know everything really irritate the one that THINK'S that they do :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: I am going to back off if I can, I started this conversation to give credit to Raceland Kids (and Boyd's) and I can't see arguing with some people over youth baseball.

She may had been on the team between the 2 state winners. But she wasn't on the '98 or the '01 teams. I know without a doubt. You know the coaches, ask them. But who really cares. Raceland is playing great ball now. Let's hope they keep it up and play strong in districts.

Statmaster I would say that the mother / father of the girl would be ones that would care the most amoung others. I would imagine that you would care if the shoe were on the other foot. I know that the Porter family made the trip to Knott Co. and I seriuosly doubt that they made it bc they didn't care or that just made the trip for their health! I was a youth coach quite few years ago as you were more recently than I. I considered it a honor and privilage to work with the kids. IMO the words "who cares" should not be in a youth coaches vocabulary. The community of Raceland/Worthington, parents & families and people that made donations for these kids also cared. Wouldn't you? heck, you were a coach. You are right about one thing, the Raceland baseball team is playing some very good baseball right now. We all know girls cant play sports, especially with guys. If that girl was on the team, I am sure it was purely for Title IX reasons. She should have stayed home and played hopscotch and not taken the spot from one of the boys who probably deserved it.
