Raceland HOF

Featured Replies

Didn't they start a Raceland Football HOF a couple years ago? Who is in the HOF so far, and who are the inductees this year?

As a follow up are there any other local schools that have a HOF?

I would like to know who has one and the process they go by.

That's what I'd like to know. I know Raceland has one, but I don't know if it's football only, or all sports go into one sports HOF. I know James Boggs went in a couple of years ago. Do they have an official induction ceremony and dinner, and do they use that as a fundraiser?

The death of Mr. Tomcat got me thinking about why Ashland doesn't have one. They have an distinguished Tomcat award they give out every year during the AIT, but I think a HOF for each sport would be a great idea, and could be used as a fundraiser if they had a dinner and induction ceremony.

Yes, Raceland does have an HOF, As for the list of members, Ram or sidelinedoc would be able to get the list of the members now and this years inductees.

So is it a HOF for all the sports, or just football? Do they have an induction ceremony and dinner? And when was it started?

^^, Just Football on this one. Basketball has a separate HOF and I hear that a Baseball hof is in the planning stages.

Yes, there is an on field induction for each years class on the night of the first home football game. Earlier on that same day there is a All Classes Raceland h.s. reunion and a presentation ceremony inside the school. the inductees each season are presented a framed jersey, plaque. The reunion is held in the old gym directly adjacent to the Ram Stadium Entrance and it's for all students, athletes and non athletes alike. Afterwards they fill the parking lots and grounds with a combined tailgate leading to that nights home opener.

The football HOF Started a few years ago (approx. 5-6 ?? ) and the basketball started before that.

Thanks OR. Do they have a list of all of the HOF members on a board at the school or at the stadium somewhere? I would love to see Ashland do something like this. Especially in football. I think it would go great with the stadium renovation if they had a HOF wall.

I believe they do in the school, not sure on that one.

Raceland has a Football HOF and a Basketball HOF. I know of some schools that have just one HOF that includes all sports and distinguished students. Raceland's Basketball HOF started about 10 years ago, I started the Football HOF after years of hearing people talk about but not starting it. It was started two years ago.

Here is Raceland's HOF structure: It's called "The Raceland Legends" officially. A panel was assembled to review, research and vote for inductees. The names of the people on the panel are not made public, the members represent former players and fans from over 50 years and many of the panel members have assembled a historical depiction of Raceland Football on their own prior to being placed on the panel. The first inductee class consisted of 22 players and one coach (A full team). The first class consisted of players from the 30's though the 2000's. After the first class, each year roughly 5-7 players will be inducted. There has currently been two classes inducted, and this year will make the third class.

There is an induction luncheon and induction ceremony held prior to each home open, the home opener is now scheduled on a Saturday each year. Each inductee receives a framed jersey with their number from High School (except for one of the players in the 30's who did not wear a number, that player had a number "1"). All new inductees are announced prior to the home opener on the field. The first two induction ceremonies have been great events for all to see. The induction ceremony is held in the High School Auditorium and is open to the public.

There is a sign placed in the entrance of Ram Stadium with all inductees' names on it.

There needs to be a HOF for the other sports as well. Too many good athletes get left out. Track & Field is a prime example with a guy a Raceland who won seven state championships in four years. Baseball another example.

Thanks. Great info. Does a player have to be out of school a certain number of years before he becomes eligible? Who is the oldest living member?

I Agree 100%

The nominated players have to be out of school for, at least, four years. We struggled to decide the time frame, we settled on four years.

There are a few deceased members, because we waited too long to start the HOF. I'm not sure on the ages, my age prohibited me from a great memory. If I'm not mistaken, the oldest "living" member is Dr. Glenard French who played in the 40's and was the leading rusher in the entire state regardless of school size his junior year. Dr. French left High School and went straight in the Army to serve in Korea. After his time in Korea he enrolled in college and became a chiropractor and had an office in Russell until he was in his 70's. He is still in good shape and looks 20 years younger then he really is. Dr. French told me he had some big colleges interested in his football talent, but he chose to serve his country first.
