I just read the new list of inductees for this year in today's edition of the Daily Independent. Congrats to all of those in this year's class. Can someone please tell me though how in the world Michael Hunt hasn't been inducted yet?

I honestly can't answer your question other then to provide speculation. I was the president of the Raceland booster's club for four years and started the HOF, I made the president's position a position of advisory on the HOF committee, so, after my stent as President I was off the HOF committee and the next president of the booster's club took my position on the committee.

 

I can say, Michael Hunt's name was brought up, but he was not voted in. I can only speculate that due to injury he was not voted in. Everyone that knows Mike, knows he was one of the best athletes to play, not only at Raceland, but in the entire area. But, Mike suffered a devastating knee injury in a pre-season scrimmage his senior year and missed the entire season. Mike went on to play college baseball at Morehead and set several records in baseball at Morehead.

 

When first starting a HOF, there are so many deserving people it is impossible to put everyone in at one time. If you did, there would be no one to put in the HOF in subsequent years.

Why don't you feel you're deserving of the HOF? What about Hunt? Who does the nominating? What about Paul Smith? He was probably the best player on those mid 80's teams.

I will never be in the HOF because I was a roll player. I did what was needed and I feel I did that well, but I was not a super star. I enjoyed my time playing for Raceland and played above my potential, but I played with many players that were more deserving for the HOF then I am. I value the time I played with those players, but everyone can't be in the HOF.

 

I think Hunt's injury is what has hurt him being in the HOF and I would venture to say he would say the same. Hunt is a Raceland legend, ask anyone that has followed the program for 30 years. The HOF is in the hands of some great people that know Raceland football more then anyone. They know all the names well. I say Hunt was a great high school and college athlete.

 

I have absolutely nothing against Paul Smith, and he may eventually be in the HOF. It's up to the committee. With that said, I don't think you can say he was the best player at Raceland in the 80's. There were some great athletes. James Boggs and Scott Speaks were pretty darn good. Mike Fannin never, NEVER, caught a single pass that was not a touchdown. Now, Raceland didn't throw that often then, but nonetheless every pass he caught was a touchdown. Jeff Speaks was one of the best OL to play at Raceland and in the area.

 

The bottom line is, when you start a HOF for a school, there are a lot of deserving people and they all can't be inducted at the same time. There will be some hard feeling and some questions as to "why not this guy", it takes time to get everyone in the HOF that deserves to be in the HOF. There were some great players in the 30's, 40's, 50's and so on that deserve to be in the HOF. It takes time. Being on the committee is definitely not a job I would want. I know there would be people complaining no matter who you select, or don't select. Personally I think the grill master belongs in the HOF.

That's why the members of the committee are not disclosed. You think you have questions, when the HOF was started I had a lot of "conversations" with fans. But, that is the best part of it, Raceland football is always a topic of discussion in Raceland, but the HOF really spurred conversation in the community. I couldn't go anywhere where someone didn't say "What about this guy", "why not this guy", "are you crazy? so and so should have been first ballot". Most were very nice and wanted to talk, some were not so accommodating. The discussion was the best part as far as I'm concerned.

 

The grill master was most defiantly a big part of the Raceland Football environment. One of a kind.

Conley among Rams Legends

Raceland football is set for its third celebration of what has become an annual event — the Raceland Football Legends induction ceremony.

 

Six former members of the Rams program will join the Raceland Football Legends on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 4 p.m., hours before the Rams open their 2015 season at Ram Stadium against West Carter.

 

According to Rocky Crouch, co-chairman of the Raceland Football Legends, the inductees are as follows: Coach Jim Conley (regarded as the “savior of our football program,” Crouch wrote), Paris “Buddy” Salyer (class of 1962), Fred Bundy (1966), Dwaine “Moose” Sexton (1986), Larry Massie (1986) and Matt Bostick (1991).

 

Pizza, cake and refreshments will be served after the ceremony in the Raceland-Worthington High School auditorium.
