Do we need County Clerks?

Featured Replies

Maybe. Every time I go in there it's packed with people doing different things. Mostly vehicle registration.

I think it will be a slow process towards total automation and probably 20 years from now we can do away with them like we will be able to do away with a lot of jobs.

Also to answer your question, yes, we still need someone to hold the post of "County Clerk" as someone's name has to appear on all the paperwork, but I agree that a lot of the functions of the physical offices could probably be reconsidered.

Voter registration online

Wanting to move marriage license online

Would be easy to do most everything else online also. This may save counties 100 of thousands of dollars a year.

County Clerks don't cost the counties anything in the end.

County Clerks collect much more in fees and taxes than they use to run the office. Even after dispersing the taxes and fees to the county and state they are generally left with a huge surplus in the fees that are allocated to run the Clerks office and those fees are turned over to Fiscal Court at the end of each year.

If the services provided are moved to on-line, those fees would then in all likelihood go to the state and not to the county. I'd rather those fees be used locally than turned over to the state to use.

I could only image the real estate records without a County Clerk involved. Heck, in some places that do have them it's a complete mess.

I'd be interested in the upfront costs for developing an online system for each of these functions. Some of the online functions we have right now don't work particularly well.

But eventually they will.

The endgame should be to decrease and/or do away with all unnecessary fees.

Eventually everything will be reduced to zeros and ones so even if you have a mess you will have all the available information to correct the issue.

Lots of people with vested interests in making sure they stay just the way they are. Running a property title search in Jefferson County is like speaking in a different language. They could easily get that system off the weird MS-DOS programming and make an easily searchable database of lien and transfer records... but they don't.

Sure, lots of corruption in government. But just like you suggested, eventually some progressive government will get it right and all the others will be FORCED to follow.

It should be, but license fees and taxes won't go down if the Clerk is eliminated...the only thing that would change is where the money goes, IMO.

In the government model we all know and accept right now I agree but that will change too.

Once everything becomes computerized so will accountability.

Technology will change politics for sure.

If technology can rid Frankfort of greed then that would be awesome.
