Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free

Featured Replies

Thought this record had already been released. I've loved everything I've heard from it so far. Just hope there's at least one super-song on it like "Flying Over Water" where Isbell shows off his guitar skills in a big, soaring, anthemic way.

Finally gave it a spin last night and my first impression is that it sounds great. Not a bad song on it. It doesn't achieve the greatness of "Southeastern," but it seems to be just as solid.

Read a nice review of it on the AV Club the other day.

It also came with a cool slipmat.

Man...I had the album pre-ordered back in like April, but I didn't get any stinkin' slipmat when it showed up last week.

I've got to be honest...I think I may be more of a Isbell fan when he was still fresh from his days with the Truckers, and was personally still a little more about drinking and raising hell. I think Here We Rest was a definite departure from Sirens Of The Ditch and Jason's self titled album with the 400 Unit, and it took me a short bit to really get into it. Then Southeastern (his first album written after getting sober) was an even further departure, coming off notably different yet from Here We Rest. It probably took me a full 3 or 4 months of having my wife spin that record at home in our apartment for me to decidedly like it...although I thought "Elephant" was a damn phenomenal song from the get-go.

I've only listened to Something More Than Free two times thus far, and although there wasn't a single song that I heard and thought 'I don't like that one', I didn't have a single one pop out as a particularly great one either. I guess I'll have to give it a little more time.

"24 Frames" is the only one that has really pulled me in from the new album so far.

That's what holds it back a little bit. "24 Frames" and "Children of Children" stand out a bit, but there aren't those defining songs that make a good record great. I think every song is good and it's a solid record from start to finish. It's a subtle album, but doesn't have the poignancy of "Southeastern."

He's as good of a songwriter as there is and the acoustic work he puts down is captivating. But for a guy that can plug in, turn up the gain, and let it rip like he can you'd think there'd be a little more of it. Back when I first heard this record was coming out the early word was that it was going to be more of a rocker than "Southeastern" was and that made me excited. It's slightly more upbeat, but still very much an acoustic singer/songwriter vibe.

As a lyricist, Isbell may be the best out there right now.

This is the #1 album in the Country, Rock, and Folk categories this week according to Billboard.

Got to see him live this week and he seemed quite proud of that. Put on a burner of a show too. One of the best I've been to in a while.

I've seen Isbell about 10 times since he left the Truckers. Never put on anything short of a fantastic show.

I saw him a little over a year ago and he put on a great show, but the crowd wasn't into it so much or something. Seemed like a lot of people were there because of all the press he was getting and were more interested in chatting than listening. A couple of idiots yelling for "Freebird." That sort of thing. The crowd was really into it this time, singing along and cheering wildly, and he seemed to be feeling it. He brought his opener, Blake Mills, up for what amounted to a slide-guitar-off for an extended solo portion of "Children of Children" that might've been the highlight of the show.

I really like this album.

The title track and Speed Trap Town are my personal favorites.
