CovCath is a perennial pre-season pick to come out of Region 9. After a tough loss in PKs in last year's Region 9 finals to an inspired St Henry side, CovCath looks ready to reload again as the prohibitive favorite.

The midfield may again be the engine that makes CovCath go, with Bryce Day (2nd team All-state; 6 goals and 5 assists) joined by returning midfielder Jacob Litzler (5 goals and 9 assists). But CovCath will have A LOT of options with 22 rising seniors in the program and a talented set of rising Juniors as well. Biggest challenge may be sorting through the numbers to find the right combinations and chemistry before October rolls around (again).

Is there any other team in Region 9 that looks as good as CovCath (on paper)? Who looks best situated to play spoiler and surprise in Region 9 come October?

Scott had an amazing run last year getting about as close to a state title as you can get. You can't really replace a Treadway or Schneider, but Scott obviously has returning talent (Devin Morgan for one) and is well seasoned. Does anyone else out of Region 8 or Region 10 look like they can make a run this year?

Cov.Cath definitely the class of nky and I'm having a hard time thinking who would give them a challenge but we all know they have a hard time getting out of the region. This might be the year they get out of their own way and move on to the sweet sixteen.

Getting out of their own way might not be far from the truth. I am not sure how you manage 20+ Seniors and a handful of Juniors that will also warrant some playing time.

Is it possible that some of these Seniors are actually cut before the season starts.

Not all that familiar with what other teams have coming back but yes, CCH has a lot of talent available but that was the case last year as well. I think we'll see a big roster with a lot of seniors who may not see the field that much but who knows. I see at least 3......maybe 4 junior starters and not much more than that but again, just a guess.

22 rising seniors??... Oh my goodness, Scott won't even have 22 on the roster and half of the players on the varsity roster will have to play JV.

I guess that incoming freshman who will be playing for a national championship in a couple weeks will be on JV. Cov Cath is going to look like St. X with 24 players on the roster and quality throughout. I think the Cov.Cath. fans are guardedly optimistic:eek:

Good luck with that, freshman rostered on JV. For years CCH has run their program in way you rarely see. For the most part freshman only play freshman, and it is very rare for sophomores to play varsity, at least during the regular season. Some of both are called up one team come tournament play. Is it working, does it work? They haven't won a Regional title in 5 years. Depth in high school soccer is over rated, will 20 some seniors and a large handful of juniors be the enough this year? Only time will tell but it hasn't worked out so great the past 5 years. Schools that seem to have the most consistent tournament success get contributions out of 3 classes, 4 on rare occasion on the boys side. Impact players, 2-3, with good supporting cast make a bigger difference then a lot of depth. Scott was perfect example of this last season.

Jeremy played two freshman and a sophomore when he took Highlands to the finals in 2008

Never said it was the coach, have no idea how makes these program decisions at CCH or Highlands for that matter. I'm not for certain, but I've heard CCH rarely if ever in the past 8-10 years or more have put a freshman on the opening day JV or Varsity roster. It happens but again rarely in over this same period have they put a sophomore on the opening day varsity roster.

I will be shocked if he is on JV to start the season, later in the season is more likely.

I have been told that the staff is also a stickler for being in attendance for tryouts so this could also be an issue.

They only have about 15 Juniors, this class will seem small. :lol2:

In the past yes, but since the current coach has taken over, that changed. The current senior class was his first class as frosh. 8 frosh played, and started JV and it would have been 9 but one made a decision during tryouts that held him down until frosh was over.

If you think about it, this senior class is the coach's first full 4 year class. He knows the story behind every player .......

You must not follow too closely but I don't want to be too critical. I'd agree that CCH has not had any frosh on the varsity roster the last 8-10 years but as Oldtime points out, there were about 8 of them on JV during Jeremy's first year. Regarding sophomores playing varsity, that is not as common but both Bryce Day and Michael Wessels started every varsity game as sophomores (and juniors). Both are rising seniors. Last year there were no sophs or frosh on varsity but again, it happens.

He's a nice player but let's not overreact to any frosh at CCH. Assuming he should be on JV to start the season is premature and I'm not saying you are stating that as fact. Just keep in mind that CCH's frosh team last year was undefeated and they beat every big name school in the area. To say an incoming frosh is due a spot on JV doesn't quite take into account what they have in the rising sophomore class.

I'd agree that depth is a little overrated in high school, assuming you are injury free and don't need to call on your depth. Most teams that have made noise in the state tournament from N. Ky have had impact players and CCH has lacked that a bit lately. Treadway at Scott, O'Hara at Boone, etc. Without those players, those teams do basically nothing but in high school, one player can carry a team.
