What are the daily duties of a major league manager?

How does he impact his team?

Do major league baseball teams have pre-game meetings to go over a game plan?

Do they review scouting reports as a team?

Does the manager and/or his coaches review the opposing pitcher and what his team's pitcher is going to do against each opposing hitter?

The manager is essentially the CEO of the team. He makes sure all the players and coaches are up to speed on the game at hand. He makes sure the coach who controls the infield alignment is well prepared on the tendencies of each hitter. He makes sure the pitching coach and catcher know what batter do at the plate and when to throw what pitch when. And he makes sure that the hitting coach knows the opposing teams pitching staff and can tell the players what to expect. Then all of the stuff you see during the game.

 

It's a really tough job honestly, don't know how many people could do it.

Can't speak for MLB but I know when I worked for the Freedom in the Frontier League, the manager and coaches had a pre-series meeting with the team to go over everything. Then each day the meetings were smaller pertaining to the opposing starting pitcher.

I think all MLB managers have someone with "the book" that is prepared with such facts as Mesoroco is 1 for 19 against this starting pitcher and Pena is 11 for 17 with 3 HRs and 10 RBI. (Insert Price sits Pena joke here). Or the Braves bullpen has pitched 12 innings in the last two games before this series and these two pitchers are likely unavailable tonight.

 

And also they probably know how each player has performed against all the starting pitchers in a series. So they can make a decision about who to play or pinch hit. They also know what each player on the Braves has done against the Reds pitching. So they can say "Hey Leake walk this guy who is hitting .650 off you and pitch to the guy who is hitting .125 off you.
