Phelps hows the numbers for spring practice?

Featured Replies

Why a question on the Hornets? I’m setting here watching the Pike County bowl game between Pike Central and Phelps and the announcer mentioned that Phelps only dressed twenty-two players for that game. So, therefore I thought I would ask the question.

Good luck in 06 Hornets.

I talked to Coach Hagerman a few weeks ago. Sounds like they had VERY good numbers considering what he had to play with last year (he was hired on very late and pretty much "got what he got"). Despite many playing baseball, I believe they had 25-30 at each practice (about the same as our numbers).

He's instituted a weight program and he's trying to get the other sport coaches to work with him and share athletes.

Incidentally, I really wish the KHSAA would allow us to start including our NINTH-graders-to-be in spring practice...at a Single-A school, being allowed to use only TWO classes (the upcoming 10th and 11th graders) and trying to let the spring sport guys not go full contact gives you almost no chance to have an 11-on-11 situation.

I thought it was impressive that Phelps got the kinds of numbers given the numbers situation they've been in and those rules about not using current 8th graders.

I agree with the incoming th graders. They should be allowed to participate in Sping practice. It would help if they were even allowed to participate without pads. Just learn the offense and defense of the team they will be playing for the next year. Just goes to show you the KHSAA is not wanting football to succeed in KY. IN most schools, Spring practice is a waste of time for the coaches and teams. W/O using the baseball and track players that does'nt give you much to work with. PLus the other states are allowed to have scrimmages with other schools and KY can't do that.

You actually have 3 classes which can participate in spring ball; (1) 9th to be 10th, (2) 10th to be 11th, & (3) 11th to be 12th.

However, I would like to see the 8th to be 9th be able to participate, BUT since they are not permitted to physically participate with varsity players until they have completed the 8th grade, this would require a rule exception clause and I don't see that happening. There is also a huge difference between most 8th graders and most 9th - 11th graders due to the training the weight training and having already been thru varsity practices, so I do understand why the rule is in place. Football and soccer (boys & girls) are the only 2 KHSAA sports where this is an issue as they are considered the only 'contact' sports by the KHSAA.

You're right...sorry I mis-spoke about only having 2 classes with which to work. 3 classes to work with -- especially as SMALL schools with a lot of participation in spring sports -- still would make it tough though.

I like the idea above about at least letting them participate in NON-CONTACT drills only -- that way they can learn technique and actually be allowed to step through plays and defensive schemes/pursuit drills being worked on.

Or, if possible, have a frosh coach to work with them when they do have contact only among themselves. It doesn't violate the heart of the rules and some 8th graders do get to play frosh ball as middle schoolers, but cannot participate with the varsity or even dress for varsity games.

I agree coach the incoming freshmen are the ones that need spring practice the most IMO. Gets them adjusted to the speed of the high school game compared to jr high. Some of them told me it was torture not to be able to get the pads on when everyone else was. Guess theyll learn the true meaning of torture come july when practice starts.

IMO 8th graders are the ones who need it most. I believe thats why alot of freshmen get hurt is because theyre not used to the speed of the high school game, this would help them adjust better.
