Man shot dead after police chase in Houston

HOUSTON — Houston police have shot and killed a man after a police chase that started with a suspected traffic violation.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating. A spokesman for the office, Deputy Thomas Gilliland, said that after the chase, two Houston police officers told the suspect to show his hands, but as they approached his car he reached back into his vehicle. Suspecting that he was reaching for a weapon, both officers opened fire multiple times, killing the man.

Neither officer was hurt.

A statement from the Sheriff's Office didn't say if a weapon was found.

Authorities say the chase began when police tried to pull over the driver for "suspicious activity," including unsafe lane changes. They said the vehicle eventually struck two other vehicles at an intersection before stopping.

Listen to the police or you die. Seems fair...

Anybody that runs from police must not watch or read the news these days.

Assuming that he did indeed reach for "something" then the police had no choice.

I assume, though, that we are not saying this is the same as the SC case where the guy took off running.

Different case, some outcome. This guy did not show his hands when asked and when he reached in the car 2 cops blasted him. No mention of a weapon being found or of race of officers or perp.

Different case in may ways. This was a no-brainer as reported.

I was just wanting to make sure we agree that ignoring an offer/running is not in and of itself enough reason to shoot.

Agreed separate cases and this one I doubt that anyone questions this shooting.

In the other case I think there is still a lot of missing pieces to the puzzle. Totally wrong to shoot a guy just for running. Still not sure if the man ran from the cops, got caught, wrestled with him, grabbed his tazer than took off running again. Not saying that justified the shooting but it is not as clear as what this one appears to be.

Unfortunate that we even have to mention the race of either.
