Every date will have it's problems, but how about the day you turn 14 you can no longer play 13u sports. Even though it may be in the middle of a season everyone will know that the 14 yr olds won't be able to finish the season in 13u.

My boys race bicycles also and that is how that sport works. The reason it works is because it is an individual sport so you can move up as your age increases. However, in a team sport it is hard to find a new team as a parent and as a coach you'd have to back fill spots in the middle of the season.

 

That is why I think the data should be at the start of the season.

The same exact date or the same theoretical date. May 1st is at the beginning of baseball season. May 1st is midway through AAU season. May 1st would be an improvement. But still old 13 year olds could be playing against young 15's I'm 14U.

Any specific date isolates some of the kids, May, August, Jan, any one day of a year, so i guess that's why I think it should be the kids birthday. Anyway it sure has seemed to kick but for AAU this year.

So the results of the state AAU tournament show how things change when everything is age based... In 13U boys, northern Kentucky team, the Legends wins D1. In 14U boys, KY Royals, also a northern Kentucky team, wins handily. I do not believe either of them had won a state championship before. On the girls side, 8th grade D1 winner is the Shining Stars (4th straight year I believe), and the 7th grade D1 winner is the KY Royals (3rd D1 state championship in 4 years).

 

So the boys AAU tournaments have changed to being age based, and northern Kentucky is winning championships. The girls is still grade based and the same teams keep winning ... sort of confirms to me that a lot of successful teams were winning with "older" kids .....

Those of us that have been playing that way for years knew that all along. Believe it or not. This year the exact same thing occurred to my 8U team. We were getting beat by 20 by 2nd grade teams. Then get to state and roll right through it. I'm really surprised that the 13U boys bracket only had 3 teams. I figured that several of the D1 teams would have come back. But I don't think any of them did. Congrats to the winners.
