It was an unusual game in that 7 of our varsity starters were not able to play in the first 6 innings on Saturday due to prior commitments to attend the Prom. The game did not start until 7 p.m. and they had to be places at that time. So, it was quite miraculous that our JV and subs played SK to a 4-4 6-inning tie and the game was suspended due to darkness. When we played SK previously, they scored first and then we hammered them 12-6. It was unfortunate that our varsity did not get to play the entire 7 innings and then the one run would not have loomed so prominent in the outcome. It was do-or-die, sudden death on Sunday starting in the 7th inning and we died due to the mental error.

Thats all it took. The Ryle JV played Simon Kenton to a 4-4 tie in a suspended game the night before. The game started the next day at another location in the top of the 7th.

That was my point. You never lose a game on one play. It's a factor but you have every opportunity to make that up or be ahead enough that it doesn't affect you that much. If you would've said Prom lost you the game, I would've agreed. Also, did Ryle have an at bat?

 

Pretty tough to be mentally in a game when there really isn't a game. Shoot, sometimes it takes 3 innings to realize you are actually playing.

Good points. OK, so that we can be in agreement, prom lost us the game by not having 7 innings of our varsity vs. SK's varsity. I like our chances in that matchup.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that. What I'm saying is that if you're full squad is there the entire game on Saturday, the mental error may not even be an issue. I don't like putting the entire game on the shoulders of one kid. There are so many factors. For instance, how'd the guy on second get on base in the first place? Baseball has too many variables to put a loss on one kid. His failure to complete the play ended the game but it most certainly did not lose the game for them. At least IMO. We'll just agree to disagree here.

If Simon Kenton would have started the game at 11:00 Sunday instead of trying to start it after 7:00 on Saturday night on a field with no lights we would not have this issue. I think they thought they could finish our JV off quickly and were quite supprised when they couldn't. As it ends up...they get a base runner on, THE MENTAL EROR, ballgame. Should have never came down to that. But thats ok...SK didn't win it anyway.

No disdain for Ryle. I still think they'll contend for the region. I really like the coach. Zero reason to dislike the boys from Union.

It is not a rare occasion for a team to get shut out for one inning.

 

In fact, it usually happens to both teams five or six times a game.

First, your game was started late by rain, and their is nothing SK could have done about that. Their field is in a old lake bed and from what I was told, the dugouts were filled with water on Saturday morning......

 

Second, it was your Prom night, not SK, so why should they have had to play three full games in a matter of seven or eight hours to accommodate Ryle.

 

Third, your team could/should have realized that things happen and not even been in the Doc Morris Tourney if you were concerned about missing the Prom (which I can understand the Junior/Seniors not wanting to miss)

 

BTW, Ryle wasn't even a High School when cshs81 was going to school, so how in the heck could he be so against them..... cshs81 who I have had the pleasure of meeting in person, is a fair and honest man and is a fine example of a human being who just loves watching the kids play and succede........

and Diamond Dandy I appreciate your posting about the game and its information about how the Raiders lost it......but your above quote in bold sounds like sour grapes...Manybe you didn't mean to sound as such, but it does......and I will agree with cshs81 that the Raiders will be one of a couple of teams playing for the Region Championship......
