Look, without sounding like I'm complaining...

Longer posts sway more that shorter ones, so if swaying gives you problems calling kicks, then shorter is better. However, if the official is under the post, there is no way to get the call wrong. You look right up the post and see where the ball passes, inside is good, over or outside is no good. And it is still the only place to know for certain if a kick is good. No matter how high the posts are. The kick may be close, but it is not hard to call.

Now for an entertaining kick, with an official in the wrong position ckeck this out: http://home.comcast.net/~minnmo/football/Cancila_Kick___WMV.wmv

What if the kick was to the left? No ref! How can one ref make an accurate call? Good call Hey-Ref, good mechanics make it an easy call. :thumb:

OK, I give up since we've beat this horse to death. Maybe my problem is that all my games have been called by the crew in the video. I don't think they knew it was a kick and that guy was just down there because he was going to get a hot dog.

Not sure what your question is but here goes. First, there are two officials under the posts, one under each upright. So the mechanic I stated above works no matter which side you are under. That makes it an easy call every time. The video I linnked above I said ther official was not in position. Notice there was only one official at the post, and he did a great job to move to the psot closest to the kick before rulling, and he got it right. The official who was out of position is the line judge who should have been back there with the back judge.

One more time. If you are in position this is an easy call to make, no matter where the kick is.

You're correct! It was my weird way of agreeing with you. The lone official did a great job but the other one should be back there.

The real issue is the games played on college fields where the uprights are 6 feet narrower than high school.

It made the difference in the 2A Title game in '93... ( )

But of course, it would hardly be practical to replace posts (at a college venue) only for the HS Title games. And even more trouble would evolve from having the officials "judge" whether the kicked ball was within 3 ft. of the upright.

The last post about the title game location made me think about something (sorry if hijacking)

If I were a HS coach my practice field would have a college goalpost rather than HS size. (for practice and psychological edge on Friday nights)

Anyone know if this is true?

This is a great idea. It would sure make those goal posts seem as wide as the ocean come Friday night.
