March 2, 201511 yr Racers (26-4) finish undefeated in the OVC. First time since Austin Peay in 2004 (if memory serves). Austin Peay lost in the finals of the OVC tournament to Murray State that year. In Prohm's four year tenure, Murray State has now won 23 consecutive games in his first season, and 24 consecutive games currently in his fourth. Both are the longest in school history. At 101 wins now, which is amazing for a school of Murray State's size. This team is not as good as their last two teams that went to the NCAA tournament, but Cameron Payne is by far the best player on any of those teams. He finished the season averaging 20.2 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 2 steals. He also led the league in assist/turnover ratio. I read last week he was top 5 (#3, maybe) in the nation in Pomeroy Rankings. Again, this is not as strong of a team compared to some of their more recent, especially on defense, but Payne is a difference maker. They get to avoid Belmont/EKU until the finals, but UT Martin is solid who they will probably play on Friday. It would not shock me to see them lose as they've had some narrow escapes. But 24 in a row is still 24 in a row.
March 2, 201511 yr Congrats to the Racers if I'm correct with the Zags lost Sat. I think now that UK and Murray have the two longest streaks in the Country!

Murray State was always a game ahead of Gonzaga. They've had the 2nd longest winning streak since Stephen F. Austin lost a few weeks ago.
March 2, 201511 yr ok sorry didn't realize that really KY has some good quality college basketball teams this season.
March 2, 201511 yr On today's version of ESPN Bracketology, Murray State was listed as a 12-seed playing Butler in Seattle. The 4/13 game was Wichita State/Valparaiso. I know Valpo handled Murray back at the beginning of the year, but if they bracket actually fell like that, Murray would have to like their draw.

March 2, 201511 yr Author If it fell like that the team that would love their draw is the Shockers. Valpo is good. They would match up well with Wichita State as they have size for a mid-major. I still subscribe to my theory it helps lower grade teams to play in whacky environments at odd times of the day. Going to Seattle to play a midday game on a Thursday would fit that perfectly.

And the Shockers are much better than both. Couple that with the fact that they're still a mid-major school, and they won't be overlooking either. It would be the perfect draw for them. No potential major conference opponents until the Sweet 16.

March 2, 201511 yr Racers check in at #25 in this week's AP poll. #24 in the coaches poll. Edited March 2, 201511 yr by UKMustangFan
March 2, 201511 yr Author Racers check in at #25 in this week's AP poll. This is the third time I can recall now that Murray State has been ranked. They finished the 1998 season 29-3 and came it at 25 the final poll of the year. They were beat down by Rhode Island 8/9 game in Oklahoma City, a game I flew out to. URI with Tyson Wheeler and Cuttino Mobley went on to the Elite 8. And of course in Prohm's first year they got up #7 before losing a tough game to Marquette in the second round. 6 seed that year and well deserved. They are nowhere near the 25th best team in the country this time around. In '98 I could buy it. They lose this weekend they shouldn't get in to the tournament. 11 or 12 seed fits their resume.
March 2, 201511 yr Author I just hope they find a way to send Murray State to Louisville in a 6/11, 5/12 game.
March 2, 201511 yr Author ^Believe that RI team had Odom, not Chandler....He went straight to the league. Tyson Wheeler, PG. Odom was not on that team.
