February 20, 201511 yr Purdue absolutely dominated the series (and pretty much the Big Ten) in the early years. Lately it has been more Hoosiers, but one of my favorite stats is that Gene Keady beat Bobby Knight 21 times out of 41 meetings. One of those Purdue wins, though, was vacated for using an ineligible player So he beat him 20 out of 41 times? Is that really that crazy? I'm missing your point...

February 21, 201511 yr So he beat him 20 out of 41 times? Is that really that crazy? I'm missing your point... I didn't say it was "crazy;" I said I enjoyed it. Obviously this comes from a Purdue perspective...but there was so much talk about how great Bobby Knight was. He was considered an excellent coach, but I thought he was a jerk...and to me that out-weighed everything else. And in this case, he didn't even have a winning record against the school's biggest rival? (minus the forfeited game.) That part of the rivalry was a bummer for me: I watched all the Boilermaker games I could find...except I.U. I told my wife, "When my primary interest is hoping the other team's coach loses, I have lost my perspective." The attitude and "completeness" (if I may coin a word) of a coach far out-weighs a winning or losing record to me. I enjoyed listening to I.U.'s play-by-play man Don Fischer and I had no trouble cheering for Bill Mallory's football teams...so it wasn't just a rivalry thing.

It was a surprise. I think Purdue's overall lack of success in the NCAA Tournament, at least relative to Indiana, is part of the reason why people are shocked by the statistic. Indiana has been to the tournament 37 times, with 8 Final Fours, 5 championships, 1 runner-up, and 1 third place. They're 64-32 in tournament games. Purdue has been to the tournament 26 times, with just 2 Final Fours, 1 runner-up, and 1 third place. They're 35-26 in tournament games.
