12th Region Review 2/2/15

We still have a few weeks of regular season basketball left before the playoffs begin but one thing we can take from the season thus far; this is going to be a very interesting 12th Regional Tournament. This past week proved that anyone in the 12th Region can win on any given night so favorites won’t necessarily have an advantage come tournament time. Both Boyle County and Wayne County avenged their only district losses and gave Lincoln County and Southwestern their first district loss. East Jessamine upsets district leading Mercer County to put the 46th District #1 seed up for grabs if East can beat West Jessamine this Friday night. Pulaski County can lock the #1 seed in the 47th District with a win over cross town rival Somerset this coming Friday night after beating Rockcastle County.

This looks to be another interesting week in the 12th Region with some big regional match-ups as Southwestern travels to Lincoln County and West Jessamine goes to Boyle County tomorrow night. But, Friday night is designated as rivalry night as Boyle County travels to Danville, West Jessamine travels to East Jessamine, and Somerset goes to Pulaski County. Plus there are some good out of region match-ups on the schedule with Wayne County traveling to Clay County and Lincoln County playing Taylor County in the Jock Sutherland Classic at Lafayette.

I still think the 12th Region breaks down into four groups:

Group 1: Region Favorites

-Boyle County

-Wayne County

-Lincoln County

-Southwestern

Any of these four can win three games in March and get to Rupp

Group 2: Sleepers

-West Jessamine

-Mercer County

-Pulaski County

Each of these three can win a game in the region and could even make the finals with a perfect draw and a perfect game. Can't see them winning it all, though.

Group 3: Good Teams, But...

-Danville

-Somerset

-East Jessamine

-Casey County

All four of these teams have shown themselves capable of winning and losing games within the region. All will have difficult district tournament matchups, however, just to get to the region.

Group 4: Not This Year

-Rockcastle County

-McCreary Central

-Garrard County

-Burgin

-KSD

How do the tie breakers work?

How do the tie breakers work?

Coin flip in the 45th.

Coin flip in the 45th.

Is that first? I thought it was common opponents/common sites, then coin flip?

Is that first? I thought it was common opponents/common sites, then coin flip?

I was told coin flip last night.

If East beats Burgin tonight and West on Friday, and Mercer beats Burgin on Friday, we'll have a three-way tie for 1st in the 46th.

At that point, it's a blind draw between the three teams. If only two teams tie, it's a coin flip, from what I've been told.

In the 48th wayne and SW are tied but in a 3 team district where you play both teams twice the winner of the 2nd game is district champ. Wayne wins the district.
