Madisonville looking for a new coach

Featured Replies

Sholders resignes last week to spend more time with his family. Could be a sleeper if they can find someone that will stay with the program for any time.

Heard from a pretty reliable source that they were starting to make some cuts in things like Transportation for one. No longer an allotted amount given from the board/school.

Hard enough fundraising as is. Then, you throw in "Oh, by the way....you now have to pay for drivers and fuel for the big yellow birds to any and all Varsity, JV, Freshmen, 7v7's in the summer and off season weight meets."

I would like to see Jay Burgett get a shot, isn't he the DC there

I know we have been dealing with this very issue for the past several seasons. I guess it would probably not be out of the realm to expect more schools going this route in the very near future.

Jay was a very physical player with a high motor. I really enjoyed watching him play while he was at Mayfield. If he can get that team to bring to the field what he brought between the lines every Friday, they are bound to successful.

This job will get some big time applications. If they get a coach that is dedicated and will put in the time this could be a great job with them being in 4A.

Good Job but opposite district will be brutal. Warren Central, Franklin-Simpson, Warren East, South Warren will make it tough sledding year in and year out to get out of the Region. Right person should be able to get some wins though.

Not sure who the HC was in 96, but for the sake of fact.....he and whomever the new HC is will make #9 in the last 20 seasons.

If I'm a coach interviewing for this job, I'm making it THEIR (the committee) interview, not mine. That amount of turnover for a program that is still thought very highly of across the state, in particular in WKY, is absolutely unreal.

I've not heard anything about the Super, Principal, etc...but, I've heard great things about the AD.

First question I would ask. Is it true that I will have to fundraise to provide transportation for the team?

If that answer is yes. Then I say "Thank you for your time. That will conclude my interview and I will check the other 35 openings across the state."

If the transportation costs are that big of an issue then you would probably be disappointed many places.

I think the growing trend is that athletic programs have to be 100% self sufficient. I know many places where you can't spend a penny unless you fundraised it, came from gate or booster club.

Boone County schools do not provide transportation, in fact, the only thing the school system pays for is coach's salaries, everything else is the teams responsibility.

I don't have an exact number, but just of the places I have a connection with, most all of them still have a transportation budget, schoool budget (although often times "fictional") and/or a couple of them (one that is now filled and one still open) have all of the above PLUS what's called a "Title 9 fund" geared towards the help with uniforms every 2-3 years (a totally different fund).

With that said, they are also both one horse towns and don't have to play the game of "If you get a roll of toilet paper, then this school does, that school does, etc."

I totally agree, though, many are starting to become 100% self funded which probably has a lot to do with mass number of openings we have seen each of the last few years & one in this off season that might be taken to a whole different level as soon as the domino effect begins.

It's not just transportation costs...it's the fact that it goes into the "one more thing that has to be taken care of" category, and one that as I'm sure you well know, is far from cheap.
