Uploading the December highlights that I have of him..will post when finished. But on those two videos alone, I don't see how anyone can say he isn't a top 10 talent?

You're going to have to give me more than (paraphrasing) "all he does is score around the rim" for why he isn't a top 10 player. The same could be said about Junior Stockwell and he is no where near as skilled as Avery. Avery does just as much down low with less size and bulk than Junior.

 

What's not included in those videos are the passes he makes from the high post to give his teammates easy baskets, how much he alters the game at the defensive end because of his length in the paint, the way he handles the ball when teams try to press Holmes, and how many different positions he will guard throughout a game because of his versatility and athleticism. Avery can guard the post or a point guard.

I respect your opinion, Clyde, but numbers don't lie.

Scoring doesn't make you a top 10 player. How good would Holmes be without Bolden. My guess, is not very. Pangallo, McDonald, Weyer, Stanley, CVH, McNeil, and even Rabe and snapp would all make their teams and teammates better. While I think Avery is solid, I don't think he's top 10.

 

I guess I should have prefaced with I haven't seen him yet this season, but I saw him multiple times over the summer with his AAU team and they got beat a few times by many, and Avery was a non-factor. It helps him to have Bolden and even Macclendon.

Not sure how that's true? Granted, you (teams and coaches) know what bolden can do, and typically he's going to do it to any team regardless, but, without bolden and his 40, Scott likely wins, and maybe "handily" (10+).

 

Am I wrong?

And, again, I like Avery. Athletic, long, has great bounce, team player, solid rebounder, does have that ability to score around the rim.... But, basketball speaking.... Doesn't have a great shot, wouldn't consider him a top notch ball-handler, passing skills aren't elite level, and his perimeter D is solid at best, IMO.

 

Again, I last saw him over the summer. But, unless he made leaps and bounds, I still think it's be hard for him to be top 10.

 

I could be wrong. I typically like your take on things, just going by my experiences in seeing him play high level competition game after game. I'll ask around and see what type of info I get. I also want to get out and watch him play. For his sake, I hope he's a stud, I've heard he's a really nice kid.

Wasn't there, so couldn't tell ya.

 

Like you said though, it's not all about scoring. Avery's double double of 23 & 12 was a bigger factor in the coaches eyes than Bolden's 40. He's playing at a really high level right now and has improved since sitting the majority of the Ballard game. That seemed to be the spark he needed.

1. Let's remember I had him top 10 before bumping him so I'm not saying he can't play.

2. I said that he has to be set up to score. Penetration drawing a defender or a lob. Your tape shows that's 90% of his scoring.

3. I said Junior and Drew can do things from the post with their back to the basket. I haven't seen them from Rod.

4. His main skill is defense IMO. He changes shots. That's what makes him so valuable. His offensive game is raw.

5. Junior can a)get position where he wants to (Avery isn't strong enough) b)catch it with his back to the basket and c)put a move together to score. IMO that's where Rod struggles.

6. Numbers. Numbers do lie if your game is getting the ball dished to you when your man has to help. Rod is a great athlete and fits PERFECTLY with this Holmes team. Reminds me of Lexi when Duran used to kill guards with penetration and Lexi would come in for the dish and score.

7. Numbers. He averages two more rebounds per game than 6'1 B Stanley. Bo has the same issue. Should be getting more boards.

 

 

 

Again, before anyone says I'm killing the kid. I'm not. I say he's in the convo for top 10. He can play. I'd take him on my team.

Is this the kid that played JV last year? Holmes had a kid, #10 on JV (I think) that impressed me against CCH. I believe he was a junior and was actually on of the first kids off the bench in varsity game.

Same kid...he had Hill and Chames ahead of him last year so he played a lot of JV and came off the bench at the varsity level. Really started to give glimpses of what he could do during the district and region tournament.
